He's fine in his Sunday morning spiritual slot. He just doesn't sound right covering SK, and, since he's more often than not absent at some stage for one reason or another, I don't know why they don't just let Allinson do it. _________________ Ron |

Aled is a nice chap ( too nice) , his Sunday morning programme is ok: if you sense a but coming.. you were right .. here it is .. but..he just has something "missing" ... remember when you were at school : you and your crowd knew all the hip cool kewel Kool or whatever way the cool trendy spelling of cool is these days words and phrases were? Yep ..... then one of the teachers would try to be all matey by attempting to be kewel: and let's face it they just weren't so you would all just laugh.. well; Aled is like that .. it's like he's just pretending to be a DJ/Presenter just to try and fit in with the rest of them.. I don't think he ever will .... ... |

Standing in for Sarah Kennedy was organised some months back - I know Aled a little bit and he said in early December that he was standing in for Ken Bruce the first week in January, and Sarah Kennedy the first week in February. So it is nothing to do with her not being well, but a pre-arranged holiday. |

Who said anything about her not being well?
I said that, on previous occasions when Aled has sat in for her, he's been off ill, or something. _________________ Ron |

A somewhat aggressive reply, I feel.
I had understood that Sarah has been off recently - hence others sitting in for her - because she has not been well.
Aled being ill while standing in for someone? - I don't remember that except once, and then also when he had his Achilles heel injury and DVT, when everything had to be put on hold for 3 months - understandably.
I've finally posted again after some months of not bothering because of the way I was "spoken" to last time. on this board. I think I'll retreat again into permanent silence |

Oh, don't do that! We need a range of sensible opinions here.

I'm sorry, Mindda, I did not mean to sound aggressive but on reflection perhaps it was a bit. I think I can safely say I don't make a habit of it; even when provoked I usually take the diplomatic route, and I don't indulge in the Kennedy/Wright/Evans bashing that goes on here sometimes either. (Have sent a PM - hope you get it)
I won't dig a deeper hole for myself. Let's hope he has a clear run at things in February; I have come to like his Sunday show, but still feel at the moment he doesn't somehow sound quite right for the normal weekday one - as Rachel has said, perhaps trying too hard. _________________ Ron |

I bet someone says "why couldn't it been that other stand in who works on BFBS? It's good to have someone different each time. It makes it less boring. |

Apology accepted, RockitRon. It might have not been so bad had it not, as I said, been the first time I had posted for some time, after some not particularly happy experiences on here before. And I was only trying to say that this sitting in for Sarah had been arranged well in advance, and was nothing to do with her recent illness. As a moderator on another forum, I am well aware of how newish members / posters can be put off by abrupt replies
Whether people enjoy Aled is a personal thing, of course. It is clear from many postings on the BBC POV boards, to which I also contribute sometimes, that many do. It is equally valid not to enjoy him.
However, I did feel that the suggestion that Aled is frequentlyoff with illness somewhat unfair; you have another thread on busy workers at the BBC. Outside radio 2, Aled does an enormous amount - The Choir on BBC 3 weekly, Friday Night is Music Night on occasions, sometimes Songs of Praise, each of which, I understand takes 3 days to film, other presenting -eg. Cardiff Singer of the Year, The Last Night of the Proms; presenting and singing at concerts, recordings etc etc. I have known him present The Last Night of the Proms, from Swansea, return to London arriving 1.30am, be up at 5.00am to present Good Morning Sunday from 7.00 - 9.00 and then be at the Royal Albert Hall the Sunday afternoon ready to present and sing at The Big Sing from 6.00 - 10.00 that evening - and he still comes out smiling. He dislikes intensely letting people down, and found the enforced "rest" when he had the Achilles heel injury very difficult to cope with. But usually he will fulfil engagements if he possibly can. As I said, whether you enjoy his style is another matter. |
