Sarah Kennedy mentioned that a new Miss Marple is needed by ITV, following the retirement of Geraldine McEwan from the role.
This is also the subject of an article in today's Telegraph.
Of several names put forward my favourite so far is Imelda Staunton. Penelope Wilton would be a good second choice.
Other names being mentioned include Dames Judi Dench and Eileen Atkins, Lynda Bellingham, Penelope Keith, Victoria Wood, Julie Walters, June Whitfield, Sue Johnston, Joanna Lumley, Emma Thompson and Jennifer Saunders.
One that crosses my mind is Gwynneth Powell, once upon a time Mrs McClusky in Grange Hill and now appearing in some soap or other.
What's your view on these or other names?
It's a touch ironic that Miss McEwan is retiring from the role at 75, whereas Joan Hickson didn't take it up till she was 78 and stayed with it till she was 86.

How about Pauline McLynn who played Mrs Doyle in 'Father Ted!' She could play her for laughs! |

Geraldine McEwan is a great actress but this really wasn't her thing, she did try to make it work though.
How about Annette Crosby for the new one. |

Much as I liked Geraldine McEwan in other things I was one of many who didn't like her as Miss Marple. Of course, the memory of Joan Hickson is still too fresh, and I wasn't keen on the way the stories were altered (some were even non-Marple ones, amended).
It puts them in a quandary. Whoever they pick will inevitably be compared to the earlier, successful incarnations, and if they pick someone radically different, or younger, they'll have to trash the stories even more. _________________ Ron |
