The former ITN newsreader Carol Barnes is seriously ill in hospital, her agent has said.

The 63-year old, who presented the News at Ten bulletin for several years, was admitted over the weekend after reportedly suffering a stroke.

She is being treated at the Royal Sussex County Hospital in Brighton.

Knight Ayton Management, which represents Mrs Barnes, said: "Her son James and close friends have asked for their privacy to be respected."

Mrs Barnes' condition has not been confirmed officially, but the Daily Mirror has reported that she has suffered a stroke.

She joined ITN as a reporter in 1976 and later presented all the broadcaster's main news programmes.

Mrs Barnes had a lengthy relationship with former government minister Denis MacShane.

Their 24-year-old daughter Clare died as the result of a skydiving accident in Australia in 2004.
