Happy to say that I've done well with SK's Showtime slot this week, with two of my special favourites on it. The other day we had Wishing You Were Somehow Here Again from Phantom and today it was the turn of the sublime You're Just in Love, sung by Ethel Merman and Donald O'Connor.

Being on my sick bed I missed it this morning Sad That's a definite sing-along-to-the-counter-melody one too. Thank goodness for listen again.

Did she say what tomorrow's would be?

Hi Ian -Can I politely suggest you review the POV's Board over on the BBC site re Sarah's latest performance.

Am the first to admit have not been able to tune into much of BBC Radio 2 this past week or so due to work pressures but quite a few folk over on the other board are getting quite excited about her truly dreadful performance recently.

Have to say I'm no SK fan and really hope she gets the sack/is exited real soon-her performances when I have tuned in are just truly dreadful.

Mark,

I have seen the POV board and with respect I see no reason to change my mind about this show's entertainment value. I suspect that Ian will think the same. The fact is that for every person who doesn't think SK is doing a good job, there is another who enjoys her show. All I see on the POV board are just that... viewpoints.
This is a subjective issue on which people will never agree.
That said, calling for her to get the sack is not at all constructive. You already seem to do the sensible thing by tuning out of what you don't enjoy. I am sure that there are other radio shows which you enjoy that I won't listen to, however I would not go so far as to call for the sack of any presenter. Please leave those of us who do enjoy Sarah's ramblings to do so.

Don't think that wishing the sack on someone is acceptable on here. You may not like her or her show, but lots of people do.

I did just that Mark. And I have to agree with Niblet, just as many positive viewpoints about Sarah.

Remember this is Radio 2, and over 40 years DJs have been allowed to say dodgy stuff, mumble, and crack insensitive jokes, day in day out, Sarah is just carrying on as usual.

I think this is the part people forget when they cry out for 'professionalism'. I'm not sure that a radio station free from personal idiosyncrasies is what I want to listen to.

Thanks for comments. Really I was commenting on the choice of music rather than SK's presentation of it. Actually I quite like her ramblings, though I appreciate they're not up everyone's street. But I agree that calling for presenters to be sacked because individuals don't happen to like them isn't very constructive.

Some fair comments made but don't forget that there are a great many people who thoroughly dislike Kennedy. Maybe some of the undernoted are the reasons why

1-Inappropriate comments (eg House Buyers are thieves)
2-Non PC comments-some bordering on racist-Germans, invisible black men
3-Cutting out large chunks of tracks
4-Talking over tracks
5-Umming and aahh-ing continually
6-Hesitating and repeating when reviewing papers
7-Playing sound effects when we are trying to hear traffic reports
8-Repetitive mis-pronounciations (sainsbugs colleeegwees etc)
9-Moaning about her health or heat/cold

Just a few of the issues-there are plenty more.

Mark,

You really are raking up stuff from last year, and her listenership is not on the decline. Indeed ask yourself how many of her teachers/nurses/shopkeepers/butchers/bakers/truck driver listeners agree with her and look forward to her next show?

For your next list how about Brand or Evans or Wright or Wogan....... no don't bother, their listenership ain't bothered either Laughing

It needs an MP to complain about a DJ before anything happens, and most of them probably listen to Sarah, keeping their finger on the pulse .... Wink

An intriguing thought but I somehow doubt that MPs are listening to Sarah Kennedy. More likely the Today programme.

If they listened to Sarah the country would be very different! Wink

Ah Mark, I can see you either posted the list to, or copied it from, the POV board, where all but the first of your points was met with an appropriate counter-argument (what you dislike others like; it's all subjective.) I like many of the aspects of presentation you mention. They create greater informality. And I have certainly never seen any indication of racism in the comments SK makes. That's just the usual 'storm-in-a-teacup' creation brigade at work.

(As for point 1, yes, it was out and out misuse/abuse of her position. But it's old hat and surely everyone is entitled to one mistake? I cvan't see it ever being repeated.)

Niblet-I beg to differ-she has made more than one mistake!

She regularly makes mistakes as detailed/reported elsewhere-eg the Press.

She makes small mistakes daily, but it's hardly worth getting worked up about whether it was Ethel Merman or Betty Hutton who starred in the film version of 'Annie Get Your Gun' (It was Betty in the film, Ethel was on Broadway Wink ) Sarah has made no other mistakes worth a dressing down over as far as I recall.

Oh well, it must be right then, if it appears in the press!!! Rolling Eyes

Lots of presenters make mistakes, press the wrong button etc. Ken Bruce has done it several times, so has Johnnie Walker, both usually laugh it off. So why is it such a big deal if Sarah Kennedy has an 'oops moment'?

Because some people enjoy being vindictive, and SK is a favourite target. Unfortunately.

I've never made any secret of the fact that I far prefer Alex Lester's style of presentation to Sarah's, but I have to say that she's better than her most recent stand-in; by and large I just ignore her waffling and look forward to the Togmeister.

Aled Jones just sounds wet.

As for Mark's list of "irritations", it's only really the last four which really irk me, together with the verbal "holiday snaps" which seem to go on longer than Children in Need!

I'm considering running a book on how long she can hold off mentioning her next holiday in tedious detail; start the ball rolling with thirty seconds! Wink

14.5 seconds from when she starts speaking around the time the first track ends.

My good fortune continues, as on tomorrow's Showtime, we're getting We Kiss in the Shadow from The King and I.

The King and I ! Have you seen the original album cover for King and I? Yul Brynner giving the finger to Deborah Kerr? Laughing

Oh here it is

Ian, I can't remember We Kiss In The Shadow? Although Marni Nixon's voice dubbed much of Deborah Kerr's apparently there are some track(s) where both voices are heard.

It comes fairly late on in the film, I think, John. You might recognise it when you hear it.

It's a song by the two "young lovers" Tuptim and Lun Tha (if she uses the film soundtrack that's Rita Moreno and Carlos Rivas; in the Broadway Cast version by Doretta Morrow and Larry Douglas). It segues into "I Have Dreamed", which is also theirs, but she'll no doubt cut it off, rather than letting it play for the full 4:58.

She caught me out! Used a lesser-known studio cast recording (with Christopher Lee and Valerie Masterson as the principals) and Tinuke Olafimihan and Jason Howard.

The Candy Man, by Sammy Davis Jr, is tomorrow's ST. Popular LONG before the Willy Wonka film!
