Looks as if you aren't making it up this time!

He'll be a miss but I hope he'll be very happy in what he does next.

There was an ongoing issue re possible loss of royalties for his Bad Penny Blues, which went out of copyright in 2006. Does anyone know if this was ever resolved?

Ian.

Never been a great jazz fan but it was always worthwhile tuning in to hear Humph's patter. I do hope he'll continue with ISIHAC for as long as he feels able to.

Hopefully Jazz will continue on Radio 2 or Classic FM will take over.

Ditto, GG.

As regards the copyright laws, the 50 year rule was reaffirmed by the Government after review in 2006, so Humph is now losing out on royalties for his performance. As is Elvis' estate for his early hits like Heartbreak Hotel and All Shook Up.

However, one of the commissioners at the EU has waded in recently with the proposition that the rule be extended Europe-wide to 95 years - http://arstechnica.com/news.ars/post/20080214-eu-commissioner-lets-extend-music-copyrights-to-95-years-ars-50-years-is-plenty.html
- good for the artists (Cliff's pension fund must have been getting worried) but bad for anyone who wants access to the recordings easily and at reasonable cost. Nothing decided yet, though.

Radio 2 has lost its oldest serving presenter. Who is next oldest?

I would hazard a guess at David Jacobs.

He's got be around 80. I can't imagine he is going to carry on for that much longer either.

It'll be sad to listen to Humpohs last show. I've listened on and off since about 1976 and still have a load of cassettes of shows which I used to edit to play in the car.

Radio 3 has a jazz request show and contemporary jazz is featured on there elsewhere. Yes, Classic FM have Helen Mayhew now but it's a midnight show and wonder who listens.

So is there a future for a programme playing jazz tracks on Radio 2?

I do even though I'm not a huge jazz fan. I find it very relaxing.

David Jacobs was born on 19 May 1926, so he's coming up 82. Desmond Carrington is only four days younger. Brian Matthew is 79, born on 17 September 1928. But I hope all three will be on the air for a good while yet.

Ian.

Ian-Based on your posting then hopefully would you agree that this fine group of broadcasters are unlikely to go on for much longer.

As one doors closes another opens for new /fresh talent then.

Trust then Lesley Douglas is working on her succession planning etc.

Well they let an ideal replacement in Helen Mayhew slip between their fingers.

Thanks, Mark.

Yes, I suppose so, but it'll be a sad day when each of them hangs up his microphone. I hope it can be delayed for some time yet.

I caught the first half of Humph's last show, his favourite tracks, and I do share some artistes with him as favourites, Billie Holiday, Basie, Sidney Bechet.

I didn't get to the end ofhis show and his parting words so went for Listen Again but seems not (yet?) available?

Given Douglas' recent record, I shudder to think who, or even what, might replace them.

Perhaps she'll recruit Coleen and Wayne, so we can all listen to songs about 'clubbing' and 'Football Chants?' Shocked

Don't even think that loudly - walls have ears! Shocked Smile

Despite not being that interested in jazz, I did listen regularly to Humph's Monday evening show on R2 before the great 'switch-around' and minority shows were sidelined further into the night - as others have said above, I too enjoyed the information he passed on between tracks.
