The BBC has secured the television rights to show Formula One in the UK from the 2009 season.

The five-year deal for an undisclosed fee marks F1's return to BBC screens 12 years after it switched to ITV.

Big deal, who's on poll position wins, lets have some World Super Bikes where the riders actually overtake each other and the excitment is higher than watching paint dry! Bring back Foggy, that's Carl and not the one from Last of The Summer Wine! Rant over, it takes hundreds of nuts to build a bike and only one in a car to wreck it! Evil or Very Mad

Well I think it's good news, I don't suppose it will tempt dear old Murray out of retirement though. Very Happy

Most the F1 is in the middle of the night anyway, so good news for insomniacs or Pete Mitchell listeners I suppose!

I stopped watching F1 when it became a procession rather than a race. Switched allegiances to the World Rally Championships which, although seemingly dominated by a handful of drivers, is to me much more worthwhile viewing. Only a pity coverage is given to ITV who don't do it justice - far better when it was on Channel 4 or back in the days of the BBC2 Lombard RAC Rally Report....

While this may be good news for the F1 fans amongst us (I'm not one of them), I wonder who will suffer?
My understanding is that the cost of winning back F1 will come out of the existing sports budget. Now unless the Beeb have a long term strategy and had already factored in the cost of this vicory, I suspect a lot of minority sports, which already get precious little coverage, will disappear completely from our screens.
On top of that, I suspect another 'major' sport may have to take a bit of a hit too.
Lets wait and see Confused

The BBC are not paying for Neighbours anymore so maybe some of the funding came from that.

I could think of at least three lots of funding they could claw back from Radio 2.. Wink

I'd knock that terrible Lily Allen & Friends on the head too... I saw a little last night and was initially pleased to see Phil Jupitas as a guest. Not for long though, it took about a minute for both of them to be swearing their heads off... is it really necessary Phil? really?? Rolling Eyes
My opinion of him has dropped.
