Displaying cigarettes in shops could be banned in England under government plans being considered to cut smoking and discourage children from starting.
Tougher controls on vending machines in pubs and restaurants are also being discussed, and the public will be consulted on the proposals soon.

I'm not a smoker, but stopping these vending machines would be a good idea. They do cost for just under a 20. I suppose not displaying may cost business as they are paid to display brands. It will put people out of business like people who make display cabinets for tobacco companies!!!
So puff away with your idea? |

I suppose removing vending machines might help but since they are mostly in pubs and pubs are places for adults I don't really see the point.
As for removing them from display, stupid idea. will they also remove alcohol because of binge drinking, chocolate because it causes obesity, etc? The nanny state strikes again |

Pathetic.. why don't they just ban it and have done with it. Typical British complication of laws.
I noticed the other day that some do-gooder wanted to re-certify films to 18 if they showed somebody smoking. What about showing people getting drunk, fighting, driving like nutcases or firing a weapon...
No wonder our road tax is going up & up and of course, all the extra taxes from green products and schemes comes in handy... _________________ Johnnie Walker read out my message on Pirate Radio! 13/8/07

Under the counter selling should help the illegal trade in smuggled cigarettes since people wont know any difference.
Also if you want teenagers to stop smoking, make it as unglamourous as possible. Making them hard to get will do the opposite for teenagers. _________________ His name was ernie ........ and he drove the fastest milk cart in the west..... |
