The House of Commons rises tomorrow for the Easter Recess (if that's the correct term two weeks after Easter) and doesn't return till 21 April.

Any other employer would stagger its holidays and remain open for virtually the whole year round.

So why don't our legislators live like the rest of us?

Think of the fuss, palaver and contention of compiling and maintaining the average office holiday list, and then imagine what a complete doggie doo-doo the House of Commons, or, worse, the individual parties, would make of the job. Plus, they would need funding. Lots of funding.

On balance, since they seem to do less harm when they're away from the office, I'd prefer them to have their long jollies off all together.

Parliament didnt meet for 9 years during Charles I's reign.

If they are at the House of Commons they will only be making more silly rules, like where is the best place to display cigarettes or alcohol in a supermarket. Keep them at home I say!
