National Union Of Teachers will strike this coming Thursday which will disrupt many children eduction and close a lot of schools.

This will cause a lot of problems for parents who have to take time off to look after their children and lose a days pay.
What are your opinions about Teachers going on strike? |

It would be nice if there were an alternative that would make the government sit up and take notice regarding the failure of the rate of pay to keep up with inflation (particularly as many teachers are already having to take what is in essence a pay cut following the restructuring of the pay system and abolition of 'management allowances'.
Can you suggest one?

The Government wont suffer it's the families who have to take time off. I also noticed that some schools are opening with some classes which makes a mockery of the whole system. I know they are separate unions, but half kids in and half out is stupid. It's like going back to the Thatcher years and teachers striking in the 80's? |

Gordon Brown in PMQ's today said that the government had offered a pay rise in accordance with an agreed formula and the teachers should therefore accept it.
I don't recall him accepting this as a valid option when Jacqui Smith reneged on the agreed Police pay rise.

I didn't say 'suffer' though. I said, 'sit up and take notice'. Yes, it's the families that suffer, which is unfair and manipulative, but they are the voting public and when they are inconvenienced to this extent then the government pay attention. In the 80s the strategy of flash one hour strikes in the middle of the day worked so well that the government actually outlawed the striking strategy used!
As I said, it would be great if an alternative could be found which didn't impact on families in the way that this strike will, but can you suggest one that will then impact on the right people?

... even though they've already reneged on part of that agreement.

The teachers are in a unique position however. It is illegal to conduct a secondary picket, but the parents are effectively doing this by staying away from their own jobs in order to care for their children, thereby causing disruption in other industries.
I today heard a parent bitching and moaning because she had to take a day off work to care for her ASBO subject little darling. She spent most of last summer moaning because the school wouldn't let her take him out of school to go on holiday to Florida. Life's a bitch.....

I'm afraid I have no more sympathy with teachers than I have for anybody else at the moment.
Most people are in the same boat and it's not just in this country, it's the world over.
The pay rise they have been offered is certainly greater than the one I've just received and compared to a lot of people I don't feel hard done by.
I was particularly annoyed by one young teacher who complained that, as she was on a starter salary of just £20k, she had to take a part time job to supplement her income.
Well I'm sorry, but there are people out there who are managing on much less than that and with far less scope for an increase than she has!!
