On today's show.

Prisoners Pay: Gordon Brown has scrapped a planned £1:50 pay rise that would have taken their pay up to £5:50 a week.

Pulling the purse strings: Has the large rises in petrol prices curtailed how often you use your car?

London Mayor: Jeremy talks to the candidates.

First Class Fine: About a woman who was fined for standing in the first class section of a train.

In advance -

Prisoners' pay - Gordon Brown is running sh*t scared of any bad publicity at the moment

Car usage - No. Never have used it wastefully.

London Mayor - I think we've heard all we need to already

First Class Fine - You need to read the full story - http://www.dailymail.co.uk/pages/live/articles/news/news.html?in_article_id=562771&in_page_id=1770

Defies sober comment. Someone obviously needed to reach their target.

I think that's one of the prices of privatisation. Perhaps (s)he is near that prize new car / TV / holiday?

You've got it in one there Ron!

This London Mayoral election has stifled all talk of local elections as far as I can see. There has been little mentioned about them which for the majority of us is far more important than which of the chosen 3 turns out to be the winner.

Does anyone put posters in their window or signs in the garden for the local candidate these days? I haven't seen any round our way and we have to vote for 3 councillors this time.

why is it you have to go to prison to get to learn a trade to work usefully in society, why are there no trade apprentices outside of prison to stop these people ending up in there in the first place? and since the prisoners stay in accomadation with food and other utilities at the expense of tax payers, why should they expect a wage on top ?

Prisoners Pay.

listening to JV's show, I understand both sides of the argument to be fair, ( wages are spent mainly on telephone calls ) but I'd say it depends on the severity of the crime. For murderers or, as the example on the show, an armed robber, I'd say they're not entitled to any such luxury as telephone calls to family. Whereas a car thief (?) should be allowed to contact his family as and when routine allows.
I didn't realise inmates produced plastic window frames though!

Has the large rises in petrol prices curtailed how often you use your car?

No, not in the least for me personally but then again, I don't drive that much compared to some.
I can't help but feel that some of the callers to the show are laying it on a little thick though. Prices per gallon have gone up for sure over the last few years but not in great leaps as was in the 70s.
The lady saying she won't be able to take her daughter for dancing lessons was it? 50 mile round trip - helloo?.

Listening to the poor old country village types - especially here in Norfolk, it might be a good thing in a way. Maybe they'll have to learn to shop and be entertained in their towns, instead of driving 20 miles to Norwich for a coffee or a beer?

London Mayor: Jeremy talks to the candidates.

Doesn't bother me who wins but Boris makes me laugh.. I'd like to see him win for the hell of it.

First Class Fine: About a woman who was fined for standing in the first class section of a train.

I agreed all the way with the guy who said "she broke the rules and that's that, she agreed to the rules when she boarded the train"
I'm all for that kind of logic which is sadly lacking in today's world.
"Children use these rides at their own risk" type thing

But having read the news story link above, it did seem she was dealt with unreasonably! I wouldn't give anybody details of where I work or my National Insurance number - even if I knew it!
What bugs me with these overloaded train stories is - why don't they add some more coaches? ( and I don't believe it's because the platforms aren't long enough! )
