When I had a few nights' B and B within the borough of Crewe and Nantwich last summer, I could hardly have foreseen its forthcoming role as a political barometer.
Normally a Labour majority of 7000 + would have been safe but I'm sure the the late Gwyneth Dunwoody had a strong personal following, and deservedly so. It'll be interesting to see if her daughter has the same sort of following, especially given the current difficulties that the Labour party is experiencing. But it seems quite a smart move to select Ms Dunwoody (sorry, I don't know her full name). Interesting times, indeed. Keep watching!

It's Tamsin Dunwoody, and I think more than alarm bells will ring if Labour manage to lose, outwith the tradition of mid-term by-election freak results and swings.
Despite the local election results I sense no major groundswell of national opinion towards the Conservative Party yet, nor, as someone who generally sits gently to the right of the middle line, do I yet have any great confidence in any of their senior figures. _________________ Ron |

Interested to hear that on the night of the Crewe and Nantwich by-election, Thursday 22 May, Question Time is coming from nearby Chester--where, incidentally, I lived for some years. This could ensure some good-calibre speakers. I shall watch with expectation!

Labour have a nerve to be complaining about heridatary toffs when they are trying to install the daughter of the previous MP into parliament. Milking the sympathy vote even before the MP is buried may also backfire. _________________ His name was ernie ........ and he drove the fastest milk cart in the west..... |

The Labour Party's barometer has just moved on to very stormy.
Of course a by-election is a good opportunity for the electorate to put the Government of the day in its place and a swing of pushing 18% wouldn't necessarily be replicated in a General Election. Even so, I wouldn't like to be Mr Brown today.

Watched QT from Chester and was proven wrong re speaker calibre. On the whole I thought the panel was pretty lightweight, despite some well-considered questions. And I do wish Hazel Blears wouldn't continually fidget in her seat!

I wish she would answer just one question she is asked. She is lucky that Harriet Harriman exists, as this makes her only the 2nd most annoying woman in government. _________________ His name was ernie ........ and he drove the fastest milk cart in the west..... |

Didn't watch last night but she usually nods her head constantly as well, which I find annoying

Another great night for Gordy last night. I dont think he could get elected to the position of dog catcher these days.
His days must surely be numbered. _________________ His name was ernie ........ and he drove the fastest milk cart in the west..... |
