Was introduced to the glories of motor bikes yesterday.  My lovely Steve suggested that we should go off for a ride, so he kitted me up in some suitable togs and we set off on the open road. Bearing in mind my great age!! was not sure whether I would like it, but joy of joys I loved it. Am now a confirmed "hooligan" like him and looking forward to many more happy hours sitting behind him. Just need to get my own gear - red I think!! Who says you're too old for some new tricks

Good for you, Spanners! Must be exhilerating and quite pleasant in this warm weather.
I've never had the urge, myself. When I was very young I once had a lift on the back of a Vespa, clinging on for dear life, and I wasn't impressed.
My brother-in-law was an enthusiast, even tried trialling for a time, and has the scars to prove it. Has largely given it up for the sake of piece of mind for his young family, but once you get the bug it's obviously difficult to drop, and he's still got a bike (don't know what it is) and has the occasional weekend trip out to blow away the cobwebs!

It's yonks since I've been on a motorbike - late 70s my brother had a yellow one .. Honda something .. he used to take me out on it when he was home on leave.... it was fun.
I do like all that coloured leather, that alone is a good enough reason to give it a go. |

Me too Ron, I also went for a quick trip up the Promenade on the back of a friend's SX200 scooter in about 1968...  I was petrified! decided then that 4 wheels were more my thing and bought an Austin 7 shortly after that.
And, my Brother in Law is into bikes and did the Dirt Bike thing too!.
He'd often tell me of 160 mph trips on certain roads with his mates 
He started to think about it and sold his Yamaha R1 road bike.
The urge has returned and now he's having a custom bike built.
personally, if I ever did want a bike, it would be a big Harley - with white walls and I'd stick to the speed limit.

Spit! Spit! Nothing more than elastic band driven two wheeled tractors!! You would have to stick to the speed limit Santa, especially on fast bends as they tend to go straight ahead if you don't slow so that your old Austin Seven would overtake you! As real bikers say " all show & no bloody go".
Rant over, back to the thread, well done Spanners, now a real biker babe eh gal? Don't forget to get tight leathers gal, not only do you look good, but they actually offer greater protection, bit like a condom

What would you know about fast bends living in Lincolnshire?
I'd have thought a "tractor" might suit you better for pulling the spuds up!

You obviously have not driven in Lincolnshire!! It may be flat but has some desperate bends. Rumour has it that the people who built the roads disliked having the wind in their face, so whenever it changed they move the road in another direction.
Whilst the Harley may look good, for the real feel of riding you need a proper bike!!

Well that figures GG, 2 wheeled HGV, busman's holiday Even my 61 T100SS was faster, smoother & more economical than any Hog.
Guess you don't manage to stray too far over the new bridge in that big 8 wheeler, cause if you read Bike riders routes many of the best riders routes be in Lincolnshire boyo and Cadwell race days don't see many Hogs, might just frighten those "good old boys" on their Jurassic thumpers Or get all that chrome tarnished

I stopped reading "Bike" when Setright died! In its heyday it was witty, informed and cutting edge, now every issue is a "which is the best sports 600" re-hash, even Ogri's stale nowadays!
As for not riding in Lincolnshire; wrote me first moped (Puch VS50) off in Claypole, coming back from Cadwell having seen Barry Sheene race and me thinking I was the man, remember those days?
I'm actually a native of Notts rather than a "Yellowbelly" though, come from a village near Southwell.
Done a few miles in the flatlands over the years, many of them on the older of these two....
Even today, 35 years on it takes on and eats T110's never mind the baby replicas!
And just to prove I really was insane I had one of these for a while....
And lived!
Spanners.... if you REALLY want to look fear in the face try riding either of these down a winding B-road; more fun than Power Rangers any day! |

Nice Kwackers GG, do you still own the beast, don't think there are too many H2's about these days. Talk about the sublime to the ridiculeous with the Hogs & Kwacker, but which is which?
I ain't a yellowbelly either, originally from Derby, but lived in Leicester and spent my teenage years in Chesterfield where I owned a Bella Zundapp 200cc scooter, Veapa 150, C11G, C15, DBD34, T100SS & a CB160.
Moved to "yellowbellyland" in 81 where I have/owned Z200, CB250RSA & GT 550. The Kwackers is just so easy to ride and maintain and just love the shaftie, too old for the chain & sprocket roundabout. Joking apart, any 2 wheels is just so much better than 4; in the summer anyway. Touching 60 now and tight leathers in the rain is, IMHO, a younger man's domain

Being new to the game GG have taken advice from my gorgeous Steve and he assures me that the Kwackers (I think that is what BB called it) is in fact a beast, very old and extremely excellent. Like BB am in my 60s, so my new adventure is just a little scary but great fun. Not sure my family agree with me, but hey you should live for the day

'Fraid not mate, only had it a few months, even then I couldn't afford 20 miles per gallon!
Glad I sold it actually, my mates used to call them "widow-makers" and you can guess why. Good choice your GT550, nice bike and absolutely bullet-proof.
