Toby Keith? I went off him with 'How do you like me now' and then came the 'Red White and Blue' tripe, which was lapped up by rednecks and scared Americans after September 11th 2001. Of course he has backpedalled his politics since then but isn't as popular as he once was.

I quite like him. He has about 50/50 of good & bad stuff.
Worst news is, he is going to star in a movie based on the hit song he had with Willie, "Beer For My Horses".
I went off music stars doing movies after watching loads of Elvis movies on TV when I was a teen. i loved Elvis, but those movies were sooo bad. i like my musical heros to make music, not movies

American girls and american guys
We'll always stand up and salute
We'll always recognize
When we see old glory flying
Theres a lot of men dead
So we can sleep in peace at night
When we lay down our head

My daddy served in the army
Where he lost his right eye
But he flew a flag out in our yard
Until the day that he died
He wanted my mother, my brother, my sister and me
To grow up and live happy
In the land of the free.

Now this nation that I love
Has fallen under attack
A mighty sucker punch came flyin in
From somewhere in the back
Soon as we could see clearly
Through our big black eye
Man, we lit up your world
Like the 4th of july

Hey uncle sam
Put your name at the top of his list
And the statue of liberty
Started shakin her fist
And the eagle will fly
Man, its gonna be hell
When you hear mother freedom
Start ringin her bell
And it feels like the whole wide world is raining down on you
Brought to you courtesy of the red white and blue

Justice will be served
And the battle will rage
This big dog will fight
When you rattle his cage
And youll be sorry that you messed with
The U.S. of A.
'cause well put a boot in your ass
...Its the American way.

Confused Tripe? I don't think it is, particularly if it was written at the time of 9/11

I still think it's tripe! I prefer 'Wasteland of the Free' by Iris Dement, or 'Where's all the freedom' by Merle Haggard from the 'Chicago Wind' album. Toby's belligerent nonsense about 'putting a boot in your ass' and his album title 'Shock and Y'all' were clearly designed to appeal to the supporters of the invasion of Iraq, despite his claims that he meant the war in Afghanistan.

Whether or not you agree with the political sentiments of the song does not determine whether it is a good song or not.
Darryl Worleys "Have You Forgoten" is a very good song, in the best traditions of the protest songs.

Yes, I had forgotten about Darryl Worley! Another one who likes to have his photo taken with military personnel. 'The Bravest' by Tom Paxton is a much better song, as is 'Cellphones ringing in the pockets of the dead' by Willie Nile. The former being about the firemen who went up to try to get the people out of the Twin Towers, and the latter is about the Madrid train bombing victims. Of course some Americans thought that Saddam Hussein was behind the September 11th atrocity and that was why these 'super patriots' flourished in Country Music for a time.

I agree that The Bravest by Tom Paxton is an excelent song. Tom Paxton is one of the great American songwriters.
But Daryl Worleys Have You Forgotten" is pretty impresive, too. The song is emotive & well argued

As to saddam Hussein, he may not have been behind 9/11 or had WMD. But the Iraqui people are lucky that the west thought he did
Otherwise they would still have been suffering under his tyrany.
We should at least be pleased for the Iraqui people & their liberation

Rather belatedly (nearly three years so in the case of the first one) I note that Sony BMG have at last decided to give Carrie Underwood's two albums a proper release in the UK, on 7th July.

I know she falls well onto the pop/rock side of country, which doesn't go down well with everybody, and the songs aren't ground-breaking in their depth, but they're the sort that become "earworms" very quickly, and she does have one hell of a singing voice, which is more than you can say for most of the X-Factor/Idol production line.
