|
|
Because I spend much of my week working at home in my little office stuffed with Mac and Windows computers, I tend to stream Radio 2's output via broadband into my pretty decent sound system rather than listening to Ye Olde Wireless Radio. Sometimes I listen to what's on-air at that point, but more often I tend to use the iPlayer facility to listen to stored programmes, such as SOTS, Johnnie Walker and whatever interesting documentaries or concerts are on offer.
Really, I'm a bit of a Podcast junkie, with my iTunes set up to grab loads of podcast updates automatically. A favourite of mine is the BBC World Service's "Digital Planet" which is made available every Tuesday. Trouble is that the Radio 2 Podcast fayre is pretty dire, to say the least. I don't really want to listen to edited versions of Wogan, Evans (god help us!), Brand (not really) or Wossy (tiresome). For copyright reasons they have to edit them down to highlights, which is also boring.
Because the Adobe Flash streaming now used by iPlayer is much better than the awful Real Player previously used, I do sometime record the output using WireTap Pro on my Mac in order to collect up stuff to listen on my iPod when I'm on the train or whatever, but in general the stuff offered by Radio 2 isn't that inspiring these days.
A few weeks back I dumped a SOTS and JW programme to my iPod and listened to them on a flight from Madrid back to the UK, but am I alone in doing this?
Does anybody else listen to or create their own podcasts of broadcast material or is all listening "passive"?
Just curious....... _________________ ONline, ONdigital and ONtherocks: BBC Radio 2. Eleanor Rigby, wearing the face that she keeps in a jar by the door. |

Yes, I must admit I do offer up a wry smile when I hear his little jibes in that regard................. _________________ ONline, ONdigital and ONtherocks: BBC Radio 2. Eleanor Rigby, wearing the face that she keeps in a jar by the door. |

I often record shows from Listen Again and have them on my hard drive. I don't have an Ipod so don't download podcasts.
I intend to edit some of the recordings but don't ask me when!

You don't need an iPod, Helen. You can still listen to them on your computer - it's just that if you use iTunes (Windows and Mac) you'll find that podcast series that you're "subscribed" to download automatically in the background and are available as and when you want to listen (or, in the case of video Podcasts, view). _________________ ONline, ONdigital and ONtherocks: BBC Radio 2. I know that, but like you I'd rather listen to the whole show and maybe cut out bits I'd like to hear again.

Shows without music (or at least, ones that contain "podsafe" music) are the best because they come down in one piece. The BBC World Service's "Digital Planet", which is about new technology and one that's closely associated with my work, is a favourite for me. It's 30 minutes and one that unless I downloaded the podcast automatically I'd never get the chance to listen.
The great thing is that there are so many (hundreds of thousands) of podcasts on every imaginable subject now - and good competition for BBCR2 in its more lacklustre moments! _________________ ONline, ONdigital and ONtherocks: BBC Radio 2.
