I think he is if he feels strongly enough about the issues of civil liberties.

It feels really strange that its now Labour that wants to lock everyone up without charge while the Tories are campaigning for civil liberties. Rolling Eyes

Either that or it's merely extreme political posturing from a bloke who lost out to Cameron in the last Tory leadership contest.

It will be very interesting to see if he gains the backing of his party in the resulting by-election as well. Place your bets.

And if Cameron is to succeed Brown as the next Prime Minister (following a general election, of course) I think it's a safe bet that the Tories won't repeal any of the laws that the current Government will have introduced in this respect.

Just a hunch!

He might win the By Election? I respect David Davis and always follow his interviews. I think he would have been a good leader for the Tories?

Well since nobody is willing to stand against him, I suspect he will win.

He tried to win the leadership but failed, largely due to his lack of charisma and speech making skills.

Some of the cynicism of the media today is quite depressing. The struggle to believe that anybody could ever act on principle. Some politicans actually can do that sometimes.

But on which party ticket, that's the point. If he isn't re-adopted by the Tories he's on his own.

That's a matter for the Tories to decide - and last time round they decided otherwise!

I don't yet know enough about this to form an opinion.

But I was amused by a letter in today's Telegraph, in which the writer said that his immediate reaction to news of Mr Davis' resignation was to wonder what he'd been caught doing.

This gives a pretty good impression of what the public thinks of politicians.

Ian.

I think the other senior parliamentary politicians are getting worried because Davis does seem to have garnered the support of people on the street who like the idea that he's standing up for principle. He's on a high-risk strategy, of course, especially since that media rat Murdoch is reportedly sponsoring ex-Sun editor Kelvin Mackenzie to oppose him as an Independent candidate.

If a mouthpiece for the Sun gets a seat in the Commons then we really do have to worry.

I don't think ill of politicians in general; my parish and district councillors do a very good job and I support them wholly - and they're also politicians.

I agree Robbie. I think Cameron will be feeling a little bit of the heat too. David David hasn't quit as an MP yet, and if he does do well in the B Election could he go for leaders job, and could the Tory party be split to whom they should back?

At least the heat is off Brown at present whilst the Tories argue between themselves.

Ian, doesn't it give more of an insight as to what Telegraph readers get up to?

If only!

I see that Bob Marshall Andrews is now supporting Davis.

If Howden and Haltemprice was a marginal seat, then the gesture politics of DD would have a meaning. However, this constituency is SO blue that they would elect a Donkey with a Conservative rosette, there fore it is just a meaning less gesture. The LibDems and Labour are right not to put up candidates and thus starve this charlatan of the oxtgen of publicity. Go Mad Cow Girl! (MRLP)

I agree. All he will have succeeded in doing is that he will have lost his shadow-cabinet post, too, as he's now in Cameron's bad books!

Can't have people acting on principle can we? It might give politics a bad name.
If it was so blue then , why did the LD's target it as part of their wondefully titled "decapitation stategy" last time around?
