Television presenter Des O'Connor and EastEnders star June Brown are among the showbusiness names recognised in the Queen's Birthday Honours list.

Other awards go to Victoria Wood, Paul O'Grady, and Russell T Davies - the man who brought Doctor Who back to life.

June Brown - better known as Dot Cotton - becomes an MBE, while Countdown host Des O'Connor is appointed CBE.

I think the whole Honours thing is a nonsense. Remember, also, that some people (eg: David Bowie) have refused to accept them.

Pleased to see that prominent LibDem MP Alan Beith has a K. He's a Vice-President of the male voice choir in which I sing and supports us as much as his commitments allow.

Pleased also to see that conductor Mark Elder now has a K. As musical director of the Halle Orchestra, he's raised the profile of the orchestra to a level not seen since the days of Sir John Barbirolli forty years ago.

Ian.

In John Peel's autobiography (well, in the first half which he wrote) he tells of being asked by Number 10 if he would accept an MBE, and his gut feeling was that he wanted nothing to do with this outdated and over-rated imperialist institution. However, his son reminded him that once he says "no thanks" that's it - he never gets asked again. And then he'd be going around telling people that he was the guy who turned down an MBE, perhaps to regret it later in life. So he decided to accept it.

Such a shame that he had so little life to live after receiving it...

When they give 'Dot Cotton' and 'Lily Savage' MBE's, the honours system is shown for the farce it is! Laughing

I'd love to know how they decide who qualifies for a CBE or OBE as opposed to an MBE etc. It often makes no sense that some theatrical luvvie gets an MBE just for being on telly or on stage, whereas people who spend their whole lives working for the social good end up with a CBE or some other tosh.

The whole system really does stink. What a waste of time!
