Since giving up work I’ve more time to shop and so have been paying attention to the little price labels on the shelves under each product. Last week I noticed that Heinz Tomato Ketchup in a squeezable bottle is hugely expensive compared to the same Heinz Tomato ketchup in a glass bottle…
A 700g Squeezable costs £1.93 – that’s 27.6p per 100g
A 342g Glass Bottle costs 54p – that’s 15.8p per 100g
So you can buy two glass bottles and get 684g for £1.08 which near enough the same amount as a 700g Squeezable for £1.93 a full 85p less expensive.
They tell us this is because the plastic bottle costs more to manufacture (oil prices etc)
However; Heinz Salad Cream does not stack up the same way…..
Glass Bottle 285g – 91p – 31.9p per 100g
Squeezable Bottle 640g £1.87 – 28.8p per 100g
What’s going on? |

Good spot, Rach, and very interesting, because it throws into relief the true value of manufacturers and supermarket "special offers"
Heinz Salad Cream has become something of a niche, dare I say it, old-fashioned product - they have tried at least once to withdraw it, and the current television advert - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3F6hwqAEXvQ - is more noteworthy for the use of a Sesame Street song than the product, which is only shown properly at the very end. They would much rather we bought their Mayonnaise, only they scored an own-goal with the ASA over their commercial for that - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xl0bkv0jCCM
Heinz Tomato Ketchup is and always has been the market leader, by a distance. The squeezable bottle is the most popular, for obvious reasons, and that size bottle is the one which is most frequently to be seen as heavily discounted by the stores, either on its own at about £1.25, or BOGOF, or labelled 100% Extra Free. Which makes it about the same as the glass bottle, so, not really such a special offer after all; just a con and pricing stuff according to market demand in the knowledge that most people will pay almost any level for something they really like.
(Sorry about that. You can wake up now ) _________________ Ron |

Do I detect from that, that you work in advertising RockitRon? If so, have you ever heard the repeats of Legal, Honest, Decent & Truthful (or something very similar) ? It's a comedy series about the advertising industry that I heard on BBC 7 a few years ago. _________________ Lord Evan Elpuss, Your ideal job is a Lumberjack. |

Thanks Ron , that is interesting - I've not seen them on BOGOF in the last Month but I do recall buying a BOGOF pair earlier in the year.
I don't know why Heinz would want to stop making Salad Cream- it's fab stuff; Mayo is great too but we buy Hellmans
Tuna! have you noticed the Tuna .... own brand is about half price of John West - now and again JW do either BOGOF on a 4 pack or they are half price ... but here's the deal ... the own brand stuff is farmed Tuna , the JW is wild....... |

No, on both counts. I'll keep a lookout for the radio series - advertising must be an easy target and it should have been funny.
When I was a teenager, my father had an "Open All Hours" corner shop, which succumbed to the commercial pressures of what is now an Asda half a mile away; almost everything there was cheaper than he could get wholesale or at the cash-and-carry. I usually keep an eye out for retail-industry news in the Business section of the Telegraph, but other than that my interest is purely as a family shopping trolley filler and payer. I don't penny-pinch, but I do notice prices, especially as they are rising by leaps and bounds at the moment, and object to paying what I feel is sometimes over the odds. _________________ Ron |

Had to pop into Tesco Metro for a couple of things yesterday. Noticed that squeezy bottle of HTK with "30% Extra Free", only the price has gone up, to £2.12.
Noticed the glass bottles have lost their traditional hexagonal shape - they now look just like any other bottle of sauce or vinegar.
And another thing - "After opening refrigerate and eat within 8 weeks". One of those bottles lasts us a year and I have never, ever thought of putting it in the fridge. _________________ Ron |

It's all a big con.....
The glass bottle I bought the other day is hexagonal but not quite as hexagonal as they used to be ... more of.... a hint of hexagonal...
I've never ever kept ketchup in the fridge.... why would anyone do that ... it's got vinegar in it....... do we keep pickled eggs in the fridge? No.
I found a fab website yesterday, mysupermarket.co.uk ... good for checking out prices... |
