Gary Glitter will be released from jail on 19 August, officials in Vietnam are reported to have revealed.

The disgraced British star was convicted in March 2006 for molesting two girls aged 11 and 12.

Chu Xuan Mau, an official at the jail, told the Agence France Presse (AFP) news agency that the former glam rocker would be let out on 19 August.

A police officer at the prison told the Reuters agency he would be released in August but declined to give a date.

Glitter, real name Paul Gadd, has been held since November 2005, and had his three-year sentence cut last year under a national amnesty.

He was convicted of possessing child pornography in the UK in 1999 and served half of a four-month jail sentence.

He later went to Cambodia, which permanently expelled him in 2002.

During my recent clearing up spell.. I found a "Best of Gary Glitter" cassette.
I played it through ( loudly ) and it was great to hear the hits again, although I almost expected the police to knock on the door. Laughing
I never really liked him as a celebrity but I did like his music. Confused

Knock Knock Laughing He did release some good songs. Shame that he turned out to be like that. I read years ago not even his band members knew of his sick mind.

I think the interesting thing is that flawed individuals can still contribute to society. OK GG isn't someone you could leave your kids with, but he did set the pop scene on fire!

must be a kick in the teeth though to have been in the band. what with the christmas hit and the others featured on every party album prior to glitters arrest they must be missing out on quite a pension fund.

imagine all the dj's up and down the country sweating like pigs in case the cd carries on to a glitter track. with all the hysteria that crops up everytime the word paedophile is mentioned they'd be in danger of being burnt at the stake.

Surely even local Oxfam shops etc had to carefully remove them? I wonder if anyone dared to sell one or two at a Car - boot sale?

what a sad picture it paints of our society eh?

the ownership of a glitter track is all the proof the "knee jerk" crowd require to run you out of town.

run john, run Laughing

In the UK yes but not just any downloaded pictures!!! It makes me feel sick to think of how those photo's were probably taken in the first place. I believe he was also tried and convicted of child sexual abuse in 06. Which is the sentence which is just coming to an end. I read he will be required to go on the sex offenders register as soon as he lands back in the uk and inform authorities of where he is living/moving to there after. Good thing I say.

I don't think it's a case of people being sanctimonious at all.

I think I read somewhere he is going to try and resurrect his pop career.

Who is going to buy his records if he does?

Well, Hewlett Packard may be helping to resurrect his career, or at least provide him with some royalties:
