I expect everyone has heard the news that Sir Bill Cotton has died, but I thought it merited a thread.

Quite apart from having a famous father, and being the spitting image of him, he presided over and brought to our television screens a right royal procession of high quality family entertainment programmes, most of which (Morecambe & Wise, Two Ronnies, Val Doonican etc) had their roots in old-fashioned Variety. He still preferred to sign people up by taking them out to dinner, rather than poring over costings and ratings - he frequently bemoaned the change to the more money-conscious way of doing things which happened while he was still at the BBC.
His going spells the end of an era, and of a dynasty - there is still Fearne Cotton, but she's a distant relative and perhaps not quite in the same league. _________________ Ron |
