His show is getting a bit desperate with this and the bloody stay-cation on Wednesday. Evil or Very Mad

Enough Olympics & if you want to spend your holidays at home, don't bore the rest of us please!

Is this Radio 2 material? I know he's trying something new, but it will disturb some listeners.

I was out in the jam-jar... luckily, I found an Aerosmith tape to listen to.
( I couldn't listen to the cd player as the 6 cd deck in the boot played up last weekend and following a vain attempt to repair it, I ripped it out and smashed it to pieces... Laughing Confused Crying or Very sad )

I am getting a little concerned about our Chris – now, you know how I don’t like to criticise (it’s not in my nature) but last night’s show was……. , well …. not good. I don’t have a problem with the athletes coming on – let’s face it, in two or three weeks we will have forgotten who they all are (well there’s so many of them) so a bit of time in the limelight is good for them, they did well, so why not. It was the guessing game introduction for each one which was getting my hackles up and then the same questions to each one. It was like a verbal sheep dip for athletes.
“ Have you been done by Evans?”

“yeah I was on last night”

“that favourite bit question is a killer isn’t it?”

“yeah”

The Stay-cation thing is not just wrong. It’s completely wrong. Chris comes back from his holiday in America then plans to sit in a hot tub in a friends garden, live on air to tell us how great it is to have a holiday at home, and how much money we can save by not going abroad.

How much money would you save by doing the show from the studio? Let’s call it Drivetime, get a few interesting guests on and play some good music.

It’s all too “Captain of the B Ark” for me.

Well I hate to say I told you so....but!

Obviously Evans is bored and no doubt will soon be going AWOL.

Can we have a decent presenter for Drivetime again please?

The One Show is a funny place to go AWOL!

Isn't he taking over breakfast in the New Year anyway? Wink Maybe that will curb his high jinks.

Must be worth all the expense as you can see in the pictures how much needs to be put together for the show.

Tonight's show sounds like an excuse to get to ogle the female members of the production team in their cozzies Wink

Apart from which it's even more embarassing, crass and juvenile than the "normal" Drivetime. The lad's getting desperate... not to mention the listeners. Crying or Very sad

Hmmm ,well I listened to every second of the Stay-cation show. It was all a bit " It's a Knock Out" - back to normal today I hope.

The interviews with the Athletes were much better than Tuesday and the live music was fab - especially the encore at the end.

The Staycation on Wednesday was brilliant. All request Thursday was great, but I bet most of the kids requests are from their parents Wink Chris was speaking open minded about Hitler and ending of music. Getting ready for TV Laughing

I like him saying I'm Chris Evans, Chris Evans, Then Steve Wright, Steve Wright, I'm not Laughing

As you all know I don't listen to Chris Evans but what is the fixation with kids on Radio 2 in general?

Why don't they go and listen to Radio 1 and leave the station to those who have had enough of kids full stop? They must have been desperate as they even had JV asking for kids to phone in.........

I'm beginning to think he'll be better on in the morning, I'll find something else to listen to.

Good to see some of the Evans believers having second doubts!

But seriously, I listened on and off to each show this week, and granted I'm not his biggest fan, but the shows have been POOR, with only Tuesday's holding any meaningful structure.

Yesterday was a lazy jolly and poor old Saunders sounds more and more like the wingman puppet in Evans' sordid circus show. Like someone else said, the guy's just come off his hols and is doing a RADIO SHOW in a glorified bathtub. And he's supposed to win sony awards for this? And poor old Rebecca, her business news is a token intellectual bit for 2 minutes of the show. Dire.

I had to turn off today after 20 minutes when the music was grating. Really - there was more substance on Radio 1 today at 5.30pm, I can assure you, at least they had some Radio 4 girl reading out listeners' emails.

Evans is simply taking the mickey, put lightly. Mad Evil or Very Mad

I tend to think the opposite. Families watch tv programmes together, why cant they listen to the radio together?

Yesterday's program from the hot tub was certainly different Laughing
I can take or leave Chris but I can't listen to him for long, he's way too excitable.
Would he calm down if he was on breakfast I wonder, if not he might not last long, still there's always Simon Bates on classic, he's ok.

Why do we have to go to kids level though? Television doesn't.

This week has been terrible. Too many gimmicks and too self-indulgent. Chris sitting in a mate's bath for 2 hours then going on about it for another 2 hours is not something listeners can really relate to.

Unfortunately, I caught odd bits of the post 5pm debacle (prfobably having been spoiled last week)

Radio 2 has certainly plumbed the depths!!!

I can't believe he's allowed to get away with not just interrupting someone (the chap, being interviewed by the business girl, who was talking about the abundance of mushrooms in this wet summer, but shouting him down. No wonder she intimated she'd rather be working on JV's show.

Seems to me as though everybody contributing to the Drivetime "experience" has to dumb down in order to survive. No wonder Martin Shenkleman was off like a shot after Johnny left, and Foxy sounds totally embarassed by being hectored to jump out of planes, sleep out in tents and strip off for his "bathtub experience", whilst he attempts to bring her down to his level. Hope she gets a shot at a professional slot with JV before her personality and reputation is pillaged by this loudmouth sensationalist . Johnny Saunders has just about lost all his credibility and sounds like a sycophantic fool being continually put down by the Ginger Whinger, whilst even Sally has lowered herself to his level - Lord knows what JW thinks, he used to allow her to be a credible human being on his show.

One can only hope that this week's antics signal that he is reaching his boredom threshold and he might push off to other pastures. Smile

I don't think Johnny's sycophantic. There are occasional sighs that suggest he's a bit fed up with it all.

Whilst out and about this past week with colleagues in their cars had the misfortune to catch some of the Drivetime Shows.

Truly dreadful extertainment in the extreme imho-rank entertainment.

How much worse can it get.

The bathtub broadcast wasn't a bubbly idea at all, it was really bad idea, and someone should have pulled the plug on the thing long before turning on the taps. It would have been an amusing TV programme, which is probably why they made a video of it, and then encouraged people to go on line to watch it during the show. They knew before it went out that it wouldn’t work on radio.
I like Chris’ shows, and usually I go for things that make a splash but it was just plain awful from start to finish. The answer to the ultimate bath filling question- “ how long have I been in the hot-tub for now Johnny” was always going to be (as near as makes no difference) for those who could tread water that long, two hours.
It may have been a really balmy afternoon but it was a more barmy idea. A classic case of the Emperor’s new clothes or maybe the powers that be are a little wet behind the ears.

The interesting discussion though is how much should things be shook up? There are those who want to hear the exact same show over and over (Wogan, Bruce & Wright seem to specialise in this). This seems to be a winning forumla for a large part of the audience that are change-a-phobic, but if every show was like that the network would atrophy.

Then again some things dont work on radio despite the best intentions. Russell Brand and some of Evans latest shows come across as self indulgent. Evan seemed to have found a happy middle ground for the first couple of years, but now is getting a bit too up himself.

I think Douglas desperately needs to change things in daytime as every show is either way too complacent or up itself right now, probably because all the presenters have been doing their shows for too long.

The problem is what is Douglas going to change to ?.

There isn't much around at present to change to, we simply get boring standings with boring text-in formats and ILR/R1 formats. They have very little to offer but time filling, no witty banter like Wogan or Bruce, no music knowledge like Johnie Walker or some of the specialist shows etc.

I know that CE isn't everyones cup of tea but at least he tries something new, I enjoyed most of his shows this week, the olympics and kids shows were good, the tub one was over endulgent but he tried..a lot more than can be said of time filling standings.

The choice of Bland or O'Leary doesn't offer much for the future Sad

Doesn't this just prove Evans is a cheap trick though?

He and Ms Douglas have thrown every gimmick in the book into the show and persistently rammed down our throats how great it all is.

But surely in reality, it isn't. He appears to be running out of steam yet his frantic delivery worsens as he seems to believe we're all sitting at home thinking he can do no wrong.

There's nothing clever or "brilliant" about spending the afternoon in a hot tub or somebody's living room. Rolling Eyes

The same can't be said for Johnnie Walker or Bob Harris or Brian Matthew though can it.. they soldier on without all the shouting, day trips, bells and gimmicks but are still adored by millions.
I listen to quite a bit of Drivetime.. for the early part at least, and I agree, he regularly embarrasses and talks down to people. The Mushroom incident was quite unbelievable really..

And I haven't even mentioned music... maybe that has something to do with it too. Funny how on the All Request Drivetime, it's all mostly great music and older music too! is there a message there? maybe today's music is so drab it doesn't lend itself to a great radio programme. Look at O'Leary's 3 hour dirge! it's painful.

None of this applies to Wrighty though.. his show differs and entertains everyday! it's the best. Razz

I can't see how Steve Wright show would be moved to Drivetime, it's a different structure and format.

Yes Richard Allinson is only a stand-in and won't change the format. I think he does fit in nicely to drive time if Chris was to move to Breakfast? Richard does appeal too the evening listeners. There is a lot more he could add to the show apart from Email and Texts, but you need that too get the listeners on board.

Dermot would appeal to the female listeners at drive which Chris does. Dermot needs to lift his game a bit which he doesn't need to on the weekend show. It's all about music and interviewing and not a fast pace show.
