Has anyon else heard the rumour that Radio 2's Aled Jones is going to take over as host of "Countdown"? I don't suppose it would affect his radio commitments.

I know that his name is "in the frame" as far as the media and speculation-mongers go - http://www.guardian.co.uk/media/2008/jul/25/channel4.television

Two big advantages that the late Richard Whiteley had was that he not only lived locally (to the studios in Leeds) but that he was also not a top-of-the-bill entertainer who was much in demand for other tv and radio work, concerts, musicals, panto, etc. The heavy recording commitment which is required of anyone presenting Countdown was therefore less of a burden to him, hence his longevity in the role, than it has proved for his successors, and, I suspect, would be for all the names mentioned in that Guardian article. Apart from that I think they would all be far too expensive for the show's apparently tiny budget.

I thought Aled Jones had already discounted himself from hosting Countdown.

Ian.

Him and about 500 others.

Isn't Rory Bremner favourite to do Countdown?

Ken Bruce would have been a good choice, but I doubt Radio 2 could have released him.

Aled Jones-give us all a break-about as exciting as cold cabbage-no way on this earth that Channel 4 executives would appoint him.

Bradley Walsh has got this gig.

No, I have to go back to the original again and say that the reason the programme was so successful under Richard Whitely was because he wasn't a big or loud personality (other than in his dress sense), allowing the contestants to play and the guest in Dictionary Corner to provide the odd sparkle. Someone like Bradley Walsh would be completely overbearing.

Who might be good is the chap who has just compered Battle of the Brains on BBC2 at 6.00; I can't remember his name. He was so bland and anonymous the Beeb didn't even bother to include his name on the press release, and nothing comes up when you google it.

OR... Does Richard Allinson fancy his chances? Laughing

Do you mean Paddy O'Connell? Former presenter of Liquid News, and TV Eurovision coverage. He tends to pop up all over the BBC, as if they know he's quite good but don't really know what to do with him.

Paddy O'Connell, that's the fella. I suppose to be fair to him that quiz show was a very restricting format and he probably wasn't allowed to stamp his personality on it (this seems to be the current fashion - the effort Jasper Carrott must require to keep a straight face through Goldenballs can't be good for his health).

Rory Bremner has apparently declined the offer to present Countdown now.
