Too soon yet, but if I travel forward 10 years in time...................
..........Evans who has just turned 50, has completed his 8th year on breakfast in style winning a lifetime achievement Sony Award. This followed a 3 year slot on Drivetime that is still talked about with awe as the benchmark for current homebound radio shows to match.
Although some posters are calling for him to be replaced by someone younger (mainly Scott Nelson Jnr.), Evans remains the king of breakfast time on Radio 2. _________________ His name was ernie ........ and he drove the fastest milk cart in the west..... |

or alternatively,
Interviewed this morning at his Fish & Chip stall, an hysterical Chris Evans reflected on his cataclysmic fall from favour at Radio Two.
As the third quarter of Rajar figures were lower than a rattlesnake's belly in a wagon rut, the new Controller at that time, Terry Christian, seemed to revel in Mr.Evans demise.
Chris shouted " I'm still great kids and I'll be back with some new ideas such as Name 20 things to climb on", but in the meantime, he was busy with his chip lady Lesley preparing another load of old tripe. |

Terry Christian, controller
Christian is such a purveyor of top class intellectual radio & television. When I think of all the innovative, public service broadcasting he has delivered over the years, I bow in admiration. Truely he is a renaisance man and a guiding light in these difficult times for broadcasting. _________________ His name was ernie ........ and he drove the fastest milk cart in the west..... |

Sorry ernie but that is just a nightmare scenario, IMHO, just too horrible to contemplate .

I know I like reading Alternate History novels but I never thought I'd see something like it here.... a nightmare vision of the future if there ever was one, IMHO!

Santa, was that AFTER he was sacked from Radio Humberside for not knowing that jumping off the Humber Bridge was a career option? _________________ Geddon

Or it could be in 20 years time..
Former radio 2 presenter Chris Evans, 60 still rues the day he played a prank took far on former breakfast show host and now BBC chairman Terry Wogan.
Lord/Sir/Prime Minister/ Wogan, 88 said he was initially amused by the artistic way in which mr Evans had arranged his snorkers and tomatoes but after spending 5 days in hospital with salmonella he asked that radio 2 comtroller Ken Bruce, 76 sack Evans.
Current Breakfast show host Desmond Carrington, 152 still pulls in 20 million listeners every morning. |

As I've mentioned elsewhere, I did enjoy his show last night (Friday). It had me bopping while making the dinner. That does not usually happen _________________ Over the hill they came....the greatest Army in the World.....The Tartan Army |

Bit of an old thread to dig up isn't it?
Cant say I listen to Evans or Radio 2 much these days actually so I cant comment on him recently.
I did hear a bit of Sunday Love Songs this morning. It reminded me of why I dont listen to Radio 2 much anymore. Gillian Reynolds doing the paper review after 11 was better though. Who was the co-presenter - it cant have been Michael Ball today, _________________ His name was ernie ........ and he drove the fastest milk cart in the west..... |

As a relative newcomer to these parts I was just spinning through the archive. I'm amazed at how many members the forum has yet how few actually post.

Tim Rice was sitting in for Ball. Not a natural presenter, but engaging nonetheless. |

gfloyd, I've always admired your defence of Evans on here. But I ask (in hope ) why don't you listen to Evans, or 2, any more? Can't say I listen to Evans, and I could give you a nice long list!! |

Well for starters I'm not usually near a radio at that time anymore. But really I've gone off Radio 2 quite a lot. I just find it very repeatitive (particularly daytime)
Anyway its only radio. _________________ His name was ernie ........ and he drove the fastest milk cart in the west..... |

I think Parky got out at the right time. Funnily enough (or perhaps not?) he makes very little reference to his Radio 2 show in his autobiography, which gives the impression that he was fed up with those who now manage the BBC and also Radio 2 but decided to reserve comment. He's more forthright in explaining what went on at ITV which led to his leaving the network - he was sidelined in favour of younger talent.
I must admit I got rather bored with Parky on R2 in the last year or so of his tenure, but I do miss the swing and 40s/50s big band dance music that he holds dear and which now doesn't get played that much and I also miss his well-researched and insightful chats with guests.
The slot is now a mess and Michael Ball's presentation offers no attraction to me whatever. Still, Planet Rock is reasonably good on Sundays, as it is on Saturday mornings when Rick Wakeman competes head-on with a certain J. Ross (whose show is the pits, in my view).
Furthermore, Planet Rock is now owned by a cluster of talented musicians - Rick among them - and that's a great antidote to the corporate, bland, antiseptic radio (anything from GCAP, for example) that is found right across the spectrum these days! |

You can say that again!!
Parky' programme was an oasis of quality music and intelligent conversation only underlined by the rubbish that immediately preceded it and which inexplicably is still allowed to continue.
How I miss Frank, Ella, Nat, and all the other top notch music that we are now hardly ever allowed to hear. _________________ MiS |

Oh yes. Just to be clear - I would much rather have the engaging personality of Tim Rice than the self-obsessed witterings of Ball. I just meant he wasn't entirely naturalistic when naming the records. |

Going back to the original subject of this thread - Christopher Evans- I heard the trail for his show on SK this morning. It just consists of a load of shouting! Do people really enjoy it? Even the trailer leaves me feeling battered, what can 2 hours be like? _________________ MiS |

My thoughts entirely. I really, really, really cannot stand Evans' trails. The guy's over 40 years old and he not only acts like a kid but he assumes all listeners are imbeciles. How he maintains an audience staggers me...... Mind you, Big Brother gets big audiences as well so what does that say about my fellow human beings? |

I'm sure there are plenty of people who find the shows you like to be awful.
I heard a bit of Chris this week as I was in the car on Tuesday evening and it sounded fine. Very upbeat & fun. A bit too much of the fathers talking about having kids, but apart from that ok. _________________ His name was ernie ........ and he drove the fastest milk cart in the west..... |

You've got it in one.
gfloyd wrote: | I'm sure there are plenty of people who find the shows you like to be awful. |
But I can't imagine many shows that I like as assaulting (a) people's senses, and (b) their intelligence in much the way that Evans does.
gfloyd wrote: | I heard a bit of Chris this week as I was in the car on Tuesday evening and it sounded fine. Very upbeat & fun. |
I heard a bit of Evans' noisy show the other day in somebody else's car. Evans was shouting in his trademark, inimitable style. Thankfully, the person whose car it was switched over to the Radio 4 news at 5 as indeed I would have done, too. His remark to me was: "Sorry, that loud-mouthed gut just gets on my t*ts". I was heartened at the comment.

I'd go further. A bit too much infantile behaviour as well. |

What's happened to Rebecca Pike - the original foxy business reporter? I assumed she was on holiday, but has turned up on 5 Live this week. Has she moved on from Evans? |
