The cost of sending children to school is putting many parents under pressure, two charities are warning.

A YouGov poll of 2,128 adults for Barnardo's and Citizens Advice found 73% of parents said the expense of uniforms was a source of stress.

Some parents who are on low income have to provide their children school uniform with a big expense as some kids will get picked on by others.

I think Asda are doing an entire school uniform for less than half the cost of a pair of trainers.... or two/three pints of decent beer .....or a couple of Big Mac Meals....

Do schools still have sales of outgrown but good condition uniform today or is my age showing again?

Ian.

every saturday the birmingham evening mail re-prints an archive copy of the paper complete with headlines, tv times(all 3 channels!) and (heres the relavant bit!) adverts.

this week was 1981 and the advert for back to school showed uniform at the price we are paying today. the only exception was the blazer that had doubled in price from 15 quid in 1981 to 30 quid today(well for my daughters school anyway)

maybe we see things through rose tinted specs sometimes?

you may also find it interesting that there was article in there saying many drivers will have no option but to stop using their cars as petrol hits the £2 a gallon mark. sound familiar?

Yes, they do Ian. When mine finished he had six sweatshirts (Year 9 and above were allowed sweatshirts in preference to blazers, which looked nowhere near as smart, but since most of them spent all but deep midwinter wearing neither I suppose it didn't really matter) of varying sizes and v g condition which we donated back to the school, and they were very glad to have them..
