Classic quiz show Going for Gold is to be revived by TV network Five.

John Suchet will replace former host Henry Kelly, who fronted the show during its 10-year run on BBC One.

Contestants from Europe will no longer take part in the show, but original rounds - beat the buzzer, four-in-a-row and head to head - will remain.

The series will air from 13 October, and is expected to fill the gap left by afternoon quiz Brainteaser - axed after last year's phone-in scandal.

The hour-long quiz will air each weekday at 1245.

"After years of reading the news, this will be the first time I've hosted a quiz show so it's a brand new challenge," said Suchet.

Interactive winner

"It is a much loved and fondly remembered quiz show and to have someone of John's experience to front the series will only add to its already iconic status," added Five's Ben Gale.

Original host Kelly now hosts a daily show on BBC Radio Berkshire.

The live general knowledge show - which gained cult status in the 1990s - features four studio contestants who will compete to become the daily champion and win a cash prize.

The winner is then given the opportunity to return the following day to defend their title.

An additional 10-minute show, Going for Gold Extra, will pit the daily champion against an interactive player.

Viewers enter the competition during the main show by ringing a premium rate phone line or by registering online to get a free-phone number.

So what was a 25 minute show 20 years now takes an hour. Yet where there used to be around 8 contestants now there will be 4.

At least they won't be using "celebrities"....

Did you know the theme tune was written by Hans Zimmer, the Hollywood composer who won an Oscar for The Lion King? And the singer on Going For Gold even features on the Pirates of the Caribbean soundtracks!

Well, in all those ten years I never saw the show once Surprised

Sometimes wonder why I pay my licence, hardly watch any of the 'big' production shows.

They are ditching the European contestants. It was always great fun watching them answer questions about English history & geography. Laughing

I always wondered where they got the European contestants from. Fair dues to them for taking part.

John W, if you were a student in the late 80's/ early 90's you would have watched Going For Gold after Neighbours every day ..... Laughing

The only time that I ever saw this was in late 1993, when I was off work for about ten days with a dose of real, as opposed to man, flu. Hence I always associate it with feeling ill!
