Listening to Five Live, they had an interview with Paul Gambaccini.

Apparently when Russell Brand's appointment at Radio 2 was announced he sent an e-mail of protest to Lesley Douglas warning her it would all end in tears.

To quote him "If you appoint a time bomb, one day it will go off"

Wonder how many other presenters were unhappy with his appointment.

Well it wouldn't take a genius to work that one out in fairness.

What, pray tell, was wrong with the previous line up on a Saturday night, anyway? Shocked

Fascinating interview. My opinion of Gambo has just gone up a few marks. Perhaps put him in charge of Radio 2 ? Smile

Sorry John I just put a link to the interview on the other thread. I keep getting confused as there are so many threads in different parts of the board with the same heading Laughing

from todays DT [isn't Terry a columnist for the Sunday Telegraph]
=========================
Wogan, who described himself as a friend of Ross, told the Daily Telegraph: "If you suspend someone of Jonathan Ross's stature without pay for three months you are diminishing not just him but also his reputation."

The presenter, who is paid a reputed £800,000 for his Radio 2 breakfast show which attracts 7.74 million listeners, the largest number in the country, said: "What the BBC have done to Jonathan by the suspension is terminal. It is very damaging to him and I would not be surprised if he did not come back."

I believe that Ross managed to achieve that just by making the phone calls, suspension or not.

Gambo's comments were well reasoned and just. Certainly one of the best explanations of this whole situation that has been put forward. Well said, Gambo. The 'pet' comment was very telling. I hope seniors at the Beeb take note of his comments on personalities and them not working the board. It does boggle the mind when such people don't bother to learn the craft. Sure, they're brought in just for their personalities, but how can they ever have control if they don't know how to work the machinery?

Admittedly, I'd be surprised if he does self op but he has spoken of enjoying his radio shows because he gets to play with the desk.

Thanks, John - like Arcader and Igs, I read it with interest and appreciated Gambo's frankness. I've always admired the bloke for his knowledge and love of music - everything you'd want in a presenter. Unfortunately, I don't get to listen to him enough nowadays since R2 was changed out of all recognition a couple of years ago. This of course may now change - I'm currently listening to Suzi Quattro at 0840 and not thinking about which station I can change to in the next few minutes!

It certainly has been a great day on R2. The comedy hour was hit and miss, and I missed Dermot (mind you I don't usually listen to the whole show - insert plea to bring back Stuart Maconie! Very Happy ) but since 5, it's been a good ride. I can't see Alex Lester regularly doing this slot (and I'm sure the guy wouldn't want to, what with his weekday shows on top?) so I wonder what changes will be made to Saturdays? I'm sure, or hope, the rumours of George Lamb are incorrect. If they become true, then let Gambo loose and PLEASE someone listen to him this time!!

From what I hear and read about George Lamb (I've never actually heard him on 6Music), it would be tantamount to throwing good money after bad to let him loose on R2. Whilst I agree that Alex wouldn't necessarily wish to become the permanent replacement, I'd happily see some sort of revolving door arrangement with him, Richard, maybe Stuart and Mark Lamarr filling in until some decent thought is given to a replacement, rather than rushing some so-called celeb in to fill the void with an "edgy"* sound.

* To me, "edgy" means nervous. Not something I'd wish to hear on the radio.

From the instance of 2edgy" humour we have it is puerile, unfunny & infantile

Michael Parkinson has also attacked Jonathan Ross and Russell Brand:

I get the impression that quite a few Radio 2 presenters were not happy with Brand being on the network!

I wouldnt say its an "attack". I think he was just honestly responding to questions asked of him. Same as Gambo.

I think a lot of us expressed our feelings when Brand was appointed? Yes it all ended in tears, by some of the DJ's who are still at Radio 2.

I wasn't on here when Russell Brand arrived at Radio 2 (circa November 2006). I hailed Lesley Douglas for introducing him to the network, and I enjoyed all of his programmes. To me, Brand is the new-age Kenny Everett.

If Kenny was still with us Brand would not be fit to lick his boots, they are poles apart.

I can see similarities between the two. Besides, Lesley Douglas also put Russell Brand in the same league as Kenny Everett.

And what that daft bat says is gospel right? Rolling Eyes She also said Brand had talent, presumably she meant somewhere in his little toe.

Brand does have talent - a lot of it. And Lesley Douglas is far from being a "daft bat!"
