I thought it was him.

My husband said it was not.

Ken Bruce said it was!

Why do I feel betrayed?

I always assumed he turned down Drivetime because he didn;t need the money, but maybe he was never offered it after all???

You,re a music journalist Stu! What gives? Please tell me Ken was joking. Those sofas are a real turn-off!

They probably wanted a distinctive voice, or one of those that makes you think "I know that voice from somewhere, who is it?" - the ad-men hoping you'll think of Brand X every time you subsequently hear him or her elsewhere.

Himself & Richard Allinson should advertise macaroni and cheese.

Martin Kemp ( former spandau ballet member ) advertises sofas so maybe his acting career has dryed up?

Most do voice overs for another income.

Marconie? Isn't he the guy who invented radio a few centuries ago?
Selling sofas now, eh?
"How the mighty have fallen!"- I thought that quote on the Story of Light Entertainment hillarious.
When Simon Dee went to sign on, the clerk said "You're Simon Dee! How the mighty have fallen!" Laughing Laughing Laughing

Apparently its not Maconie on the ad. There must be a market out there for Maconie impersonators.

Incidentally, why isn't Maconie covering for anyone over Xmas/ New Year? He is still on Saturdays isn't he?

Yes it does sound like his voice selling those wonderful sofas for a well known furniture shop. I do wonder why they can't sell them at that price all year around? Mind you if they use them to ski down a slop they should do. Laughing

Heard it tonight - "We've been thinking about you," so the voice who may or may not be SM warbles.

"Yes," I thought to myself, "the company are thinking of ways to offload stock they can't shift at the inflated prices they charge so if they reduce the price by a couple of hundred to what it really should be, Joe Public will flock to the shop thinking they're getting the bargain of the century..."

Well, Next didn't seem to have any problems in attracting people to queue knee-deep at 0500 yesterday morning.... Shocked Rolling Eyes

<Slightly off topic> but I notice TW has take over from Stuart Storey as the voice over artist for, er, what's the advert with the two guys in dresses, scrubbing ovens with bits of paper?

It does sound like him, but it's not him. Maconie DID do voiceovers for the NTL cable commercials when ABC1 started on Freeview.

Heard that as well Mark. I'd decided it wasn't him. The end part of the message was the most confusing as to if it was him or not though.

They are playing it over and over again, and I'm still convinced it's Stuart.

It's not Stuart. I can hear some similarity but the voice is younger than Maconie.

Voices can be changed slightly with computers now.

So you are saying there is another stuart maconie in the world, maybe a local dj working in the wigan area, sounding like him? Laughing Laughing

What a bonus! Stuart Maconie sitting in for CE, ..... and..... the truth about the sofa advert. At least I think it was the truth - he claims that the voice-alike has more of a Blackburn twang. And he said he doesn't mind being accused of selling sofas.... he'll sell anything - even nerve gas.
