I know that every time the CIN auction comes around, it gets a lot of criticism on these boards for pandering to the rich. One person recently suggested that a better way of organising it would be a lottery where everyone can enter for £1 or something like that. Well, I thought you might find this interesting - from the frontline of the bogosphere, Mr Chris Evans reports:

ALRIGHT GANG HERE'S THE SCORE...

We know the CIN auction prizes are...
... expensive but that's the idea, to raise as much money as possible.
And here's the thing...
The idea of a fiver a go for a chance place on the beano is indeed a belter but don't think we haven't thought of that. There's a very nice man here called Phil Hughes who has been trying to make something not dissimilar happen for a couple of years.
THE PROBLEM IS THOUGH...
Once it becomes chance or lucky dip, it is classed as a "lottery" and this is not allowed by law. This is the way it is, honestly. We would love to do three or four tables like this as well as one of the cars but it's just not a goer.
Hey ho, never mind. Auctions are fun to be at even if you don't bid. Believe me, I've been to loads.

p.s NOW IF YOU ALL WANT TO CLUB TOGETHER FOR A BID WITHOUT TEL

----------------

Though you would imagine that calling up Popmaster everyday and spending money on the call with only a chance of getting chosen would also be considered a lottery... But I guess that's the law.

That's jolly interesting Nick but lots of other Broadcasters get around the law quite simply by making it a competition with three questions ... I'll rephrase that ... a question with three answers.....you must have seen those on the telly. ...

Auctions might be 'fun to be at' but to listen to on the radio they are as dull as coronation street.

I know those competitions Rachel. Something along the lines of what colour is coal

a. Black
b. Shocking pink
c. Yellow with green stripes

I reckon they could do something about it if they wanted to, my impression is they don't want to.

Woh careful about what you say of Coronation Street, Toggy. Corrie is a work of comic genius.

As for the 'question'... perhaps that will be the way they get round it next year. Chris seemed awfully hopeful about it on the show last night.

Talking about Chris... whatever happened to that England/Scotland/Wales/Northern Ireland roadshow tombola thing he did two years ago. I liked that idea. Shame they never repeated it.

The Doctor Who team recently did something for Children In Need - they set a question, then had a phone line set up for 2 weeks. At the end of the period they randomly picked 100 people from the correct answers and they got a tour of the production building.

Seems great, and everyone gets a chance. Quite why Radio 2 can't manage this, I have no idea.

I wish I could afford some of the money can't buy stuff on offer. Lucky Business People can come up with the cash.

All shows are given I budget each year. Probably not enough funds in the show?
