From the Robert Hanks Column in The Independent this week...
The best radio broadcasters understand that familiarity is what really matters, far more than novelty: what listeners like being told most of all is what they already know. Danny Baker is particularly gifted in this direction. Baker and Zoe Ball are temporarily occupying Jonathan Ross's hastily vacated weekend slot (Radio 2, Saturday) – parking their caravan, as they put it. This week, they were asking listeners to tell them about inanimate objects that appear to have faces: all staplers, it was pointed out, have a face (the dimples in the little plate where the staple is pressed); so do many valves and switches; so, one listener pointed out, does a lot of wood, especially pine. Someone else had sent in a picture of a door-knob, which reportedly wore a particularly sweet expression, though all we had to go on was Baker and Ball's delighted cooing.
The need to know we are not alone is satisfied in other ways. Baker was soliciting experiences of machines that sound as if they are trying to play music, and listeners came up with a vacuum cleaner that made a noise just like the beginning of Pink Floyd's "See Emily Play", a woman whose TV switched on with the opening chords of Michael Jackson's "Thriller"... But what was most striking was how many people got in touch to express relief that it wasn't just them hearing these voices, seeing these faces. Baker has a flair for making these connections, spotting the phenomena in our lives that are too crazy or inexpressible to speak about, and making them seem a little bit saner, even a bit more banal.
Though it's clearly Baker who sets the tone, the pace and the agenda, it's Ball who gets top billing – a little unfair, but she is more than just a foil. At times the fossicking about in the collective unconscious (what's the greatest pause in recorded music? Who will be your sexy ghost partner while you're in heaven waiting for your real partner to die?) can get too much; Baker gets all anal, and Ball opens things up, so to speak. Though the partnership seems to have been cobbled together at the last moment they do complement one another, not least in terms of age and pop-cultural experience: I couldn't decide whether to be more shocked that Baker had never heard of 'Watercolour Challenge' (Channel 4, lunchtimes, Hannah Gordon) or that Ball didn't know Bernie Winters had a brother called Mike. On consideration, the latter is weirder. Anyway, I'm glad they've parked their caravan on Radio 2 for a while; it makes a nice change from Ross's flashy Winnebago.

I thought the first hour was good entertainment, but then Aled Jones came on and the corn was as high as an elephant's eye! The Wogan/Jones song was even worse than an X Factor re-make, so if LCD applies then it will be a hit. That's Lowest Common Denominator, not Lesley C. Douglas by the way.  |

This show would probably be quite good except for one thing - Zoe Ball
She really hasn't improved one iota since her Radio 1 days. She managed to read out the text number as 88921 and how thick can you be not to realise that The Specials tune you've downloaded fom iTunes is in fact a cover version.
Problem is, this show is relying far too much on listener input. Interaction is fine but anyone can sit and read out emails and texts and to base the whole show around it is distinctly amateurish or very ILR at the least.
Despite my reservations about DB I'll admit he could probably host a regular slot like this. Not every day though, just Saturday mornings as he is now and not with Zoe Ball as his cohort.
As much as I used to enjoy JR in this slot I doubt the show will have the same edge if, or when, he returns and we really don't need someone such as RA getting the gig as he just puts on the same format of show whatever timeslot he's in.
Saturday mornings deserve to be different from the weekday schedule |

Have enjoyed Baker and Ball on Radio 2.
Both work well together and I prefer this show to Jonathan Ross.
BUT please Mr Baker drop the pathetic joke of the type writer or blackboard when he pretends to write stuff down. Embarrassing radio!!
He also does this on 6-0-6 when I listen as well.
Stop it Baker!!

Have to say I was a little trepadacious when I saw you'd posted on this thread Daz. However delighted to see you'd actually enjoyed Dan and Zoe and even preferred to JR!
We will however still have to disagree about the type writer /chalk etc. I love it when he does that! Particularly spine tingly is when he does the dentist drill and scraper!! Eeeeeooowwww!!!

I thought Barney Rubble worked at the Quarry too? and, I knew it was Gertrude the Goose, not a chicken.. 
Due to some hassle, I didn't hear as much of the show as I hoped this morning but I could get to like him and his humour but Zoe remains as annoying as ever to me I'm afraid...

Well, I listened to all four shows. I say listened, they were on, I don't have enough spare life to sit and listen relentlessly for three hours. I have to say that Baker didn't annoy me half as much as I expected him to. He seems to have lost the high-pitched shrieky Essex Boy delivery in favour of a softer, better spoken manner. Which one was put on, I wonder? I also thought some of the music was good.
However! I did five minutes of fag packet research. On the show I looked at there were eighteen tracks played. In three hours!. That's roughly one hour of music and two hours of jibber jabber. Way, way too much. The proportions should be the other way around, at least. Lose the phone in with your amusing moments bit. It's amateurish. Custard clocks already. Made my ears bleed. Get rid of Ball. She contributed nothing. How many people tuned in because she was on, as opposed to those who tuned in because Baker was on. I know I've said it before but Baker should be easily capable of doing a modest three hours a week on his own. Allinson used to do it, Maconie used to do it, even the Posse King Wright used to do it. (Ironically because now he seems incapable of breaking wind without Tim telling him it was wonderful, Janie saying how her farts were organic and The Old Woman telling us of wind breaking during air raids).
Would I listen to him again? Probably but only if he smartened his act up a bit.

| Shame these two are not given the show on a regular basis in the New Year? Instead we will have to put up with Ross return. I think Danny and Zoe have proven a hit and Radio 2 know it. Martin Freeman and Liza Tarbuck for the next few Saturdays. Could this be a spolier and Martin Freeman will be named the next Doctor Who? |

Have to say, I doubt that Baker had any say whatsoever in being paired with Ball. In fact I doubt he'd have any say in who they paired him with! IMHO you are right. He can easily do three hours alone - but the powers that be at Radio 2 fear people won't be attracted to him on his own for all those tired, innaccurate, dated, ladish, Daz floggin', loud-mouth cockney cliches, and so have to lumber him with a commercially accessible, mainstream, giggly girly sidekick. Not necessary.

My two pennies worth:
I thought he might have grown on me but aside from learning the odd neat piece of trivia, I felt the show was rather waffley and dull - Baker had some great moments but they were few and far between unfortunately. Looking forward to Wossy's return. |

When you consider recent disasterous R2 acquisitions - R. Brand, Matthew Wright, Liza Tarbuck, Kate Thornton etc - I think there is definitely a place for Baker's radio experience, professionalism and, as you say, 'great moments'; They are adult, very well observed, cross-generational and quick witted. For what it's worth I don't think he's a 10-1pm Saturday listen. I'd trim it down to 2 hours - tighten it up. Ensure a better balance between tunes and chat, oh and lose Ball in favour of someone more low-key, like David Kuo. (If R2 must pair him with someone)
I'd also consider putting Dan on Saturday afternoon where I think he'd sit better. His and Dermot's slot would be interchangable I think.

Heard a few bits; the "custard clocks" actually made me smile, nice bit of whimsy.
Kick Ball into touch though; I agree with Number Six, she contributes nothing and I find her voice irritating in a Janey Lee Grace kind of way. |

We were driving from Peterborough to Manchester in p***ing rain. Having turned the volume fairly well down after the show started, my husband suddenly said "hang on - I think they might be playing some music..." and sure enough, they were. But not for long.
I really must learn to store some other wavelengths on the car radio - but it's easier to resort to Sudoku on the rare occasions that R2 doesn't do it for us.

So, as I suspected, Baker clearly has an audience on the network. Yes, he's not for everyone, but this surely provides some indication of his popularity among some of the station's audience.

Birthday Poker is a small example of Baker's imagination for doing something different on the radio. Glad you liked, Rachel. Loved the Basil Brush and Alf Ippititimus songs in this final show, oh and the woman caller whose date kept a record of everything he'd spent! Superb.
And, music lovers, check out the sublime Erin Bode - played out of the midday news. Just beautiful.

I have to say my initial scepticism has given way to realisation that there are a lot, lot worse presenters than DB, and R2 have given millions of pounds of OUR money to some of them!!

Quite! Although Ball became a little more bearable towards the end, they really need to either pair him up with one of his tried and tested BBC London co-hosts or let him do the shows alone. Ball became a bit of a hamstring for me where letting Baker's talents truly blossom were concerned.
I'm glad your scepticism was short lived! I think a lot of people need to realise this is 2008 and much as they (and indeed I) would like to see people like Aspel and Gerald Harper brought back to R2, it simply ain't gonna happen.
At least with Baker you've got someone in touch with 'old school showbiz' (Belle of the Ball, Basil Brush, Alf Ippititimus references etc) For the more mature listener, like me, important ingredients and comforting reference points.
I ask you, are you really gonna get that from Kate Thornton and George Lamb?!
Think on me hearties. You may not care for Baker, but you could grow to adore him given the potential alternative signings to this station!

Probably the same bunch of anoraks or Daily Mail readers who moan about Chris Evans, Wright and Ross no doubt. The fact is Baker consistently got to No.2 in the R2 listen again list of most popular shows so evidently there are lots of others who do hope he appears on Radio 2 again.

Compared to Evans at his silly shouty worst (as in today's show) or Wrighty's smugness, I'll take DB (but not ZB) anytime.
Just read your last post, Milady, and am happy to inform you that the three "gentlemen" mentioned irritate the hell at least one "Daily Telegraph" reader as well! |
