(Agree Ian, a shame about Zoe Ball! Not needed. Adds nothing and just gets in the way of Baker's flow. His BBC London co-hosts work much better. They're not 'names' and so consequently there's less ego and less of an urge for them to keep butting in unnecessarily!)

Yeah, and it's not just Baker with this problem. I'm thinking of Dara O'Briain and Mark Radcliffe too - all 3 are experienced presenters with a good rapport with the audience, and yet Radio 2 feel the need to team them with Claudia Winkleman, Liza Tarbuck and - the very worse - Emma Forbes. It's not so much the presence of the women as the fact they just blather on. I'm sure the likes of Bobbie Prior, Sally Traffic, Lyn Bowles, Rebecca Pike, etc. would be better foils.

I hope we'll hear Sally Lindsay more frequently with Mark Radcliffe after her sterling performance on the afternoon show the other month. Very capable of injecting good humour without ruining Mark's moments.

You know, it would be very easy to become depressed reading some of the stuff on here.
It was just a radio show - two random, available and willing people, thrown together in a studio with a couple of michrophones and a bag of CDs. A terrified producer hiding in the corner with a long stick - one prod for music, two prods for talk. It was... as I remember saying to a former B/F after a night together ... rather pleasant.

I was over with the Coaches on Tour in the Isle of Wright at the weekend and walking around Osbourne House listening to these both. Don't they go on with less music? Laughing I suppose it's the first week Wink Zoe seemed to be controlling the desk as Danny had a problem with it Laughing

Over all very enjoyable.

Agree totally about ZB - superfluous, making up the numbers (why?) and really just irritating - no change there then. Why did they need a co-presenter?
Can't say I heard enough of DB to formulate a definite yes or no standpoint - let's just say he's a vast improvement on the man whose name Sarah K can't even bring herself to say. But that is damning with faint praise, and I would give him another listen. I'm just thrilled for Lady B as I know what this means!

Ah, bless you my Surrey friend! Yes, I've waited about ten years for this! It's not perfect - (still think he'd have been better off with his BBC London co-hosts instead of Zoe) - but it's there, playing Erin Bode, Birthday Poker, the Tom and Jerry theme, Belle of the Ball and the like. Happy days!

Does he play any Tom Pacheco, Erin Sax Seymour, Elliott Murphy, Willie Nile, ysabellabrave, Rhonda Fleming or Jeff Chandler tunes? How about Jimmy Webb, Bill Anderson, George Jones, John Prine or Laura Cantrell? Ricky Nelson, Dion, Sanford Clark, The Derailers, or David Frizzell?

He did play Daffy Duck sings 'Yesterday' on Saturday's show though Briant. Plus James Mason does scenes from The Godfather. Where else you gonna get that class of entertainment?! Wink

You wait till he plays Porky Pig does scenes from The Godfather! Class!

Tuned in for about 15 minutes today until my wife asked "Why are we listening to this rubbish".

Only 2 more shows to go.

I didn't get much of an opportunity to give it a second chance - my husband said pretty much the same thing after half an hour and put some CD's on. Nice morning listening to Elbow, Enya and Kathryn Williams.

Gelled a bit better with Zoe this week I thought. And the guy doing Star Wars as Frank Spencer was sheer genius. Loved the balloon in the cellar story too.

This show/slot isn't for everyone, but then I guess neither is Ross or, when he's not there, Mark Lamarr bellyaching. At least Danny brings a bit of interactive fun to the table.

I never understood the current trend for co-presenters. Surely an experienced radio man such as Baker should be able to present a mere three hours on a Saturday on his own. Allison used to do it, Maconie used to do it, even Wright managed it. In no way is Andy Davies Wossy's co-presenter, just the guy who pushed the buttons.

I'm still not sure what to make of this. On the one hand, Some of the music is pretty good but I do so hate audience participation in all it's forms. And the Frank Spencer impersonation, yes him of twenty five years ago. Help.

At least Baker is a radio man and not a telly celeb (as anyone who's seen him on HIGNFY would recognize

I think there was probably some initial concern on Baker's part about being paired up. He's more than capable - and in some cases better - alone.

I think this was Radio 2's way of saying 'At least those not sure of Baker will tune in for Ball' Not sure that works and, although La Ball was better this week her rather 'commercial' style is in danger of cheapening the product.

Exactly, its just cheap time filling dull radio having people text / email to a thought up topic, and this show is full of it. Rolling Eyes

Um, just an idea, but don't listen then? There'll be another show along in a minute.

NB: Wogan's show features nothing but audience participation and gets eight million listeners so there must be some currency in the format.

I've said the same thing upteeen times when Nod and others critisise Richard Allinson.

If you don't enjoy a show why listen to it-it defies logic to do so.

We checked out of the Baker/Ball show after 15 minutes today because my wife and I thought "this is poor" so we retuned the radio to Smooth and Chris Tarrant.

Well said that man! I fear there are some who, as Wogan says, sit by the TV and radio just waiting to be offended so they can put their copy of the Daily Mail down and have a moan!

I'm guessing the great majority of those who don't enjoy Baker never listened to the previous, disgraced, (and returning?) incumbant in this slot, so there's hardly any great loss to their listening pleasure is there?

Probably no longer than Ross! Wink

In fact I think I read somewhere that Moyles once went the best part of half an hour before playing a song once!

Perhaps the Baker doubters should listen to a bit to see how much worse it could be?!! ... And probably will be when R2 eventually sign Moyles! You won't get any mention of Elizabeth Montgomery or Viv Stanshall from him so think on older listeners!

He is; and she wasn't. Despite my initial scepticism I'll admit that DB might just grow on me now he's mellowed a bit; or is it because he comes as a blessed relief after having to suffer Evans and Wright in shouty mode all week?

Ball is still too much R1 for my taste; no personality whatsoever.

Good for you, Gnome! Hopefully you're finding that Baker has a brain and was not lifted straight off some Channel 4 kids programme, like a lot of other new signings on R2.

Ball is a snag though and I fear is hamstringing Baker's intelligence by bringing the show down to a shouty commercial level, which presumably is intentional to try and attract the 'kids' who might not otherwise have given Baker the time of day.

Think his BBC London occasional co-host David Kuo would have been a much better bet.

Have to say I have been pleasantly surprised by Baker's almost quiet style - he certainly has changed over the years! ZB, however gives us exactly what we expected - not a lot, wouldn't be missed, better without her!

Good for you my friend! I think that's it - An off-putting misconception among some that he's gonna sound like Derek Jameson!

Ball needs to be replaced if he comes back though. There isn't, and I don't think ever will, be the kind of gel that he has with his BBC London co-hosts - but they're not 'names' so I fear won't get a look in!

Mind, the new controller might not be as obsessed with 'star' names as their predecessor Wink and might prefer to sign people who are just bloody good radio communicators.
