Zoe Ball and Danny Baker will be taking over from Richard Allinson for 4 weeks from 22-11-08.

It seems a bit harsh on Richard imho.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/pressoffice/pressreleases/stories/2008/11_november/13/radio2.shtml

Seems Richard is yet again sidelined and used? I suppose that goes with the type of contract he has?

I love Zoe. Danny will be different for R2, and at least he's got his foot in the door at last

Well, apologies for the language and that, but as old R2 messageboarders will know and appreciate, I've waited the best part of ten years to say this...

ABOUT BLOODY TIME!!!!!!!

WOOOOOO-HOOOOOOO!!!!!!

WELCOME DAN!! KNOCK 'EM BANDY!!

Christmas certainly has come early at Spudswell Towers!! Hopefully Brand's old slot or AN other will be his after this.

Get ready for the Candyman folks - and no messages on the answerphone now!

Why is it harsh? He's always been the fill-in, it ain't his slot.

The new duo sound great!

Absolutely! Should be fun. I too like Allinson a lot, but as Ian says, this was never his slot anyway. Plus the fact there is a duplication artifice at work here in that he's on at the same time (12-1pm) on BBC Oxford! Would the real, live Allinson please stand up!

Ross isn't due back till late Jan so every chance Allinson may return in this space.

(By the way, just to correct the billing of this thread, it's actually 'Baker and Ball' !) Wink

Just make sure Slim doesn't come into the studio and start mixing up the records Laughing I shall be tuning in out of sheer curiosity.

What alias does Scott masquerade under these days? I'd have thought he'd be on top of this by now and adding to my Baker bunting!

Suggested opening link for Baker next week:

"Well good morning everyone, and can I just start by thanking Andrew Sachs, without whom, none of this would have been possible."

Very pleased for you, Lady B, as I know what this will mean.

Can't say I'm thrilled at the thought of ZB though!

Agreed. It's going to be interesting listening to two strong, experienced, radio personalities talking over each over for three hours!

As for Baker, it was inevitable that he'd come to R2 sooner rather than later. Funny that, as someone pointed out above, it took all of the 'Sachsgate' saga to get him on to R2 (a blessing in disguise?!) As for Zoe Ball, well, her stand-ins on Dermot's show were unspectacular, but I'm sure she'll fare better with Danny boy.

Now then, what to do with 9-11pm on Saturdays...?!! Rolling Eyes

Well, what a shame that Radio 2 will still be a no-go zone for me on Saturdays. This guy didn't turn out to be the saviour of Radio 1 and I doubt he'll save R2 either.

Give it to Richard Allinson? Bring back The Critical List in it's original format? Either will be a good move after the previous disaster area that Saturday has been. At least then I would be able to listen to Radio 2 on a saturday evening.

Agree.

Give Richard the Saturday evening slot-a music based show is what is required.

Yes, I'd be happy with Richard doing some type of Critical List or album orientated show in the 9-11 slot. I'm also quite happy with Danny Baker turning up on R2 (I'm quite pleased to hear him on 6-0-6 on Tuesday nights over on R5Live as well) - just not sure about Zoe Ball, that's all.

Bless you! Yeah, know what you mean re: Ball. To be honest I always thought it would be the case that if Dan came to R2 they'd pair him up with someone and, because it's R2, that someone would have to be a name.

Personally I'd have given him Claudia Winkleman, whose faux 'ditzyness' would I think have worked well; Given something for Baker to work with.

Ball will be kept in her place though, fear not! Like him or no, when Dan's in the studio, he runs the show!

T -5 days till the glorious day! Beers are on me, 10am-1pm Saturday!

Well I had just planned to stay in on Saturday as Richard Allison was on, then I heard the ad on Wogan's show! Think I'll go out after all, there's nothing to stay in for now. At least until late morning when we get Allinson's Albums on Radio York!

Shame Angela. You should give him a chance. I know plenty will still not like and never will, but if just one person comes on here at 1pm on Saturday and says "Actually you know, I was wrong. I thought he was pretty good!" ... I shall be a very happy Lady!

If nothing else, I think you'll like Erin Bode - who he's bound to play coz he loves! A cross between Emmylou Harris and Eva Cassidy. Very good. 'Sidney Come Down' just a superb track.

According to the schedules, Alex isn't in on Saturday:

9pm - Repeat of a Richard Ashcroft concert.
10pm - A Bob Dylan show.

You may have a point, but consider this if you will, just for a moment.

What if Jonathan has been offered plenty of big money deals to go to ITV or Channel 4 during his forced absence ? He knew it would be madness to just quit the beeb and go. Why? Because he wouldn't then be able to sue the pants off 'em for unfair dismissal if the Trust did end up firing him. (Remember he said the Brand piece shouldn't be aired.)

Keeping his powder dry till now is very, very clever. He can stay at the beeb! Way-hey! No need to sue .... but perhaps every reason to draw a line under the BBC, stick two fingers up and walk away safe in the knowledge he hasn't missed out on the opportunity of taking them to the cleaners.

Also don't forget - certainly as far as R2 is concerned - a lot of the staff there blame him and Brand for the departure of their highly respected controller. It would be difficult to come back and be all cocky again.

I really wouldn't be surprised to hear that he's quit the beeb in a day or two for a clean break and a fresh format at ITV or wherever.

And, though I'm biased in his favour, I also still can't help reading plenty into the signing of Baker so hurriedly and the flag waving of the 'Baker & Ball Show' - This doesn't look to me like just a mere 4 week filler.

The caretaker controllers have evidently gone to a lot of trouble to finally get Baker - something Douglas and Moir could never achieve despite several well-publicised meetings - It's therefore unlikely that they'd let him slip through their fingers by not awarding him something permanent before a new leader is assigned (who may not share their appreciation - and mine - of the great man. The Candyman!)

I don't think ITV or Channel 4 are in a position to offer 'big bucks' to Jonathan Ross or anyone else with advertsing at an all time low.

Aye, but for Ross's career, it might still be the better option; Knowing the BBC Trust aren't hanging on his every sylable, waiting for him to screw up again.

OK, are they entertaining us, or each other? So far, not too impressed; too much blather.

On the plus side, Baker's voice isn't quite as irritating and shouty as I remembered.

I think that's it. He's mellowed vocally over the years which I'm sure will pleasantly surprise some. Not too sure about Zoe. Think he'd have bounced better off others. Still, it's early days. Give it a chance. I think as soon as it settles down and the listeners start to get what's going on it'll be fine. Remember, Ross's listeners aren't used to interaction!!

Exactly my feelings GG. Doesn't sound as though they care whether anyone is listening or not.

Not for me I'm afraid. Witter, witter, witter..... too many listener interaction topics.... not listening to the people who do take the trouble to phone in (they wittered constantly at each other while some hapless woman carried on with her tale regardless) and what sounded like a cocked-up handover for the news. Seasoned experience professionals? doesn't sound like it to me.

I'll break the habit of a lifetime and say that all in all.... yes...wait for it....I'd rather have Richard Allinson in this slot. Going to go and lie down now Rolling Eyes

Give it a chance. First show. New network, different desk etc... Appreciate though it ain't for everyone - but then, neither is Evans, Wright, Ross, Lamarr ... Fits in perfectly I'm saying!
