Interesting subjects this week on Radio 2?
I didn't know Martin Lewis the money expert doesn't celebrate Christmas. WHY?
One I idea - I always give Gift Vouchers to my family so they can buy what they like. It's easy and they have changed since the days of the old paper vouchers? I do give presents to my kids to open. Please share your ideas?

I think a lot of companies are cutting back on parties. When the choice is between firing people or cutting costs, it makes sense to cut costs wherever you can.

It never ceases to amaze me how bonkers some people go at Christmas. I go along with the notion of if you haven't got the money don't buy what you can't afford. I know somebody who used to work in a well known supermarket and she tells me that people can often be seen dragging around 2 massive trolleys full of food, the shops are only closed for 2 days for heavens sake. 
I only buy presents for close family, I don't buy for my friends and tell them not to buy for me, I would prefer that they either kept their money or gave it to a worthy cause.
Anyway I digress, I wasn't thinking of cancelling Christmas anyway |

Thats true Toggy. People need to buy because someone else buys for them?
I think if Children are sat down and spoken too by their parents - "we will not be buying as much as previous years then they will understand?
It's caused by adverts and so much shops are cramming in which makes people want more? |

I've got into ethical presents for the person who has everything. You buy some cows or trees or similar, which go to a developing country or suchlike, and a nominated recipient gets a card from you and a note of what's been bought.
I think the Oxfam website would have more details of this.

| I think they are a great idea Ian, Action Aid and World Vision do them as well as Oxfam. I would be happy to just receive these for Christmas. |

Hmmm not a fan of vouchers myself Mark- I think they limit what the recipient may buy for themselves with it. Plain old money would give them the “whatever they like” freedom to choose. Having said that though, I think money is a poor choice of gift.
Here’s my Christmas philosophy, if you don’t know someone well enough to select a small, inexpensive gift that you know they will love, then you don’t know them well enough to give them a gift at all- a card will do. For me Christmas is about getting through the darkest few weeks of the year having fun with those you love. Putting up the tree- it’s not a chore, if it is – don’t bother. Putting up the tree is a family event – everyone gets involved – it’s the start of the fun and the first day you should eat a Satsuma and open the big tin of sweets. Christmas is about parties – family get togethers – games involving large fury dice and woolly hats – playing hide and seek with your granddad – watching the Wizard of Oz and realising sprouts actually aren’t that bad after all. |

A lot of truth in that Rachel it is about family and loved ones.
What happened to home -made toys and decorations? A guy came on JV today talking about how he made his daughter a toy horse stables etc from wood, and how people had even lost the skills to make things.
One thing Martin said last year about presents for children and this is sooooooooo true they are just as happy with a cardboard box wrapped up filled with blown up balloons. How true that is - especially for the younger ones. My son used to play imaginery games for hours with a large cardboard box.
There are lots of lovely little inexpensive gifts that you can buy for people you know well and as you say if you don't know what to buy someone then you don't know them well enough to bother and a card will suffice.

| Jeremy was very shocked today to hear that a caller was 'only allowing her four children 100 quid each' to spend on Christmas presents. He seemed to think £100 was an excessive amount? I happen to agree, but she can spend as much or as little as he likes on his children. Only thing does her children know the true value of money? |

I still have a videotape of my son, aged two or three, opening his presents on Christmas morning, 18 years ago now, discarding what was inside and wanting to concentrate more on playing with the boxes. Such simple innocence - Brings a tear to my wife's eye every time.

I've been off this week as I'm moving jobs and have been listening to Jeremy Vine's show properly for the first time in a couple of years. I think he's got better? Great shows! I also think Steve Wright (shock horror) is putting out some pretty entertaining shows these days. I might be just enjoying my holiday too much but everyone seems to have been on form this week - saying that, I haven't heard any Sarah Kennedy all week...but she's clearly never below par :p (and the thing is, I mean it). |

Absolutely.. the Big Show practically bursts with entertainment!  one of the few shows I won't switch off for a cd..
