Hmmmmmmm.... apart from putting it on the telly, what would be a "big change" for a UK Radio Station like R2?

The article doesn't match Smith's headline (like that's new..). Kelner knows no more than the rest of us and has written a decent comment piece.

Iain, did you actually READ the article? Given that 2 names were mentioned, why have you headlined only one?

I wouldn't be surprised if it was Andy as he's turned Radio One around and I think he's done his job there. Radio 2 will be a tough job to do.

The bit where Martin Kelner mentions when he worked for Radio 2 between 1985 and 1996 and it was something you kept quiet about, REALLY annoyed me.
If it was so bad Mr Kelner why the hell did you stay there for 11 years????
In my humble opinion Radio 2 was a lot better during that time with a great mix of music including stuff not just aimed at teenagers.
I don't suppose there is a chance of the new controller being someone who loves music from various eras and isn't just going to pander to the Lesley Douglas crowd.
PS Is that the same Martin Kelner who is standing in on Talksport?

I think the technical term for his comments is a joke.

Do you think it was a joke Gfloyd as it didn't strike me as a joke at all.
By the way is the technical term for your reply, "smug"or "sarcastic"?

gazmando, I think it was intended as a joke - I know he's just talkig about R2 but, whatever place - that sort of alternative-comedy comment is not funny, andis in essence a lie. In fact he was being smug about having been on R2

Thanks John,
It's also his term, "The pipe and slippers brigade" that I find annoying.
What is SO wrong about catering for older people, are they not allowed to listen to music on the radio?
Since when was the BBC told to just cater solely for young people?
Anyway who say's that older more tuneful music is just for "old" people anyway, I know I'd much rather listen to great old music aswell as great new music.
Much better than this X factor, boyband, girlband, Keane, Coldplay routine that is dominating Radio2 at the moment

Whoever the new Fat Controller is, I really hope they cotton on smartish to the fact that there are many thousands of us out here who want music like Ella, Nat, Frank, etc played MUCH more than it is now.

This is going to sound extremely vague but I caught a brief snippet of a programme on Radio 4 this afternoon in which they were discussing the age demographics of Radio 1, Radio 2 and commercial stations.Sadly I didn't hear enough to find out what their conclusions were. Did anyone else hear it? It was probably "The Media Show".

Its well known that Parfitt is well overdue a promotion or a move.I can think of no betetr candidate to take radio 2 into the 21st century and implemetnt the radical changes Lesley Douglas was unable to.

He wont do anything radical. Radical would be introducing a 3 hour Bavarian folk music show instead of Steve Wright.

That's not "radical" - it's "better" Wink

Iain Smith's insider knowledge shows through again - turns out Parfitt hasn't even applied for the job of R2 controller, let alone set to get it! Laughing
