They were at pains to stress that there was nothing more sinister than a power failure on New Year's Eve at their computer centre, but Marks and Spencer were unable to accept their gift vouchers as payment for goods today.

In addition, the till scanners were not picking up many special offers or multibuys, particularly in the foodhall, so if you bought anything there today double check your receipts!

Thanks.

I bought quite a few things in M&S today-I'm going to recheck my receipts carefully.

I don't want to start rumours Wink but we overheard a member of staff tell someone to keep their reciept in case they were 'the next'

In which case it would be pointless keeping the receipt surely? Laughing

Just correcting that "I don't want to start rumours" quote which wasn't mine.

There is nothing in the share price or other City comment that suggests that M&S is in that much trouble, and for such a large company and name I think we'd get plenty of warning through those channels.

Most of the big name retailers are due to announce Christmas period trading figures over the next month, and, with the exception of food, most of them are expected to be poor.

That said, if anyone is holding any gift vouchers, for any type of store or service, they would be well advised to spend them as soon as possible. Just in case.
