It's strange how the economy has been in decline and Rail Fares are rising to keep the share holders happy. Yes!! We all know about investment in the railways, but it's not right.

Most of the rail franchises have changed hands over the last 18 months, and the new operators (and those who managed to renew) had to pay the Government through the nose for the privilege. The need to cover that cost and make some money out of them, and the obligation in the franchise agreements to invest in rolling stock, is behind the above-inflation increases. Passenger numbers have increased, so there is presumably demand even at the higher ticket prices.

In addition to the percentage rises in prices, they are also placing more restrictions on the availability of the cheaper, off-peak and advance fares.

Less people going to work. Less passengers. Less income. Do the math! Wink
