Hopefully we will have a successor for Lesley Douglas in place before long.

Whoever it is will no doubt have their own views on who should be presenting on the station.

It would be great if they were to bring in some new signings.

Who would like to see brought to BBC Radio 2.

I would like to Annie Nightingale brought to the station presenting an all request show either on a Saturday or Sunday evening.

Request shows never really work as by the same songs are always picked. It's not like the old days when Annie used to prepare the Sunday show by letters only.

I guess the appointed controller will run the show as it is at present and gradually change some things. But!! It an't broke so why change!!

I agree-some bits are broke.

Indeed some of the current presenters could well retire-if they do surely that will mean some new faces brought in.

Let's hope 'new faces' doesn't mean '6Music faces' like Dave Pearce.

Amen to that. Much though I enjoy Bob Harris, Nick tended to present a more eclectic mix.

Bring back Ed Stewart. Poach Mark Goodier & Lynn Parsons from Smooth, I'm sure they'd present a good show if they both had a regular spot that is their own rather than just holding the fort for others whenever they are away.

They would be as bland as they were when they were previously on the network I'm guessing.

Presumably you incude your mate Evans in the above remark about 'cheesy ex R1 types'.
I suspect they use the E-mail/ text thing because they are only filling in for a holidaying DJ. Given their own permanent show they will be able to put their own stamp on it. And at least they don't shout at you!

Yes new faces. Wink Terry Christian take over Breakfast when he finishes in the Big Brother house. I think he would be good signing for Radio 2?

Nope, Evans is merely a bit part in this cabaret until such time as he takes over the Breakfast show. Perhaps then he will deserve to be called a 'fixture' Cool

Well, as I'm now on an early shift, if, heaven forbid, he did get that, at least I'll be able to continue to avoid his screech-owl voice like the plague. Then again, his previous breakfast show record speaks volumes doesn't it? http://www.pictogame.com/en/play/game/qFAbqyEGmnZs_my-kick-boy

I'm starting to worry that the lack of any announcement on the new controller is because they are waiting until my application and CV flops with a weighty thud onto the Radio 2 doormat. Well, look; it’s like this guys – I don’t do job applications – you have to let me know that you want me! It’s no good thinking, we’ll tease her into it by playing the waiting game – that won’t work with me. Don’t worry about the rumours – I’m quite normal really- well as normal as anyone else. It’s January, it’s cold, boredom will surely set in soon, you need a controller as much as I’d quite like something interesting to do – so make that call – we’d be doing each other a favour.

Oh I don't know MiS, the last Controller is a really tough act to follow- which is why they've carved up the job into smaller chuncks. Whoever does take it on is in a no-win situation- if they change nothing for fear of spoiling it - then they'll be acused of having no imagination or vision- hence; wrong person for the job- if they change anything and listening figures drop - then they'll be accused of being useless and having no judgement- hence; wrong person for the job....it would be like getting Lewis Hamilton's job - it would be a brave person that said, I can make this baby go faster than he did- stiffen the suspension, pump the tyres up , pop a few shims in the dampers - get that gurney strip off and give me a push......

Sorry Rachel, I disagree...the last Controller has an awful lot to answer for, and it is to be hoped that whoever takes on the role will make Radio 2 the station it once was.

It's never a good plan to, and usually very disappointing to, "go back" Bet Lynch in Coronation Street, for example - she was the dog's whatsits in corrie - she left... corrie filled the gap - she came back - but it was different- she didn't fit in - had to leave again...not because she was different but because the world was different- you have to grow with the world. If we don't grow - we don't change- if we don't change- we aren't really alive. That's just the way of things.

I don't think listeners are anti-change. After all, Jim Moir made lots of changes which I think most of us are happy with. The new controller should understand the station and it's listeners, not change for change's sake or jump on trends like the last one did.

That's exactly what I mean! Rachel, I didn't mean "go back" I meant make R2 what it was, i.e a purveyor of quality music played by knowledgeable presenters who know how to do radio .

Jim Moir retired six years ago, and most of his Radio 2 framework is still in place, and arguably needs changing. Good as the individual presenters may be, aside from how much I like each one, or not, I think that daytime now sounds as stale and in need of a kick as the Light Programme did before the offshore pirates came along in the 60s. Just think - the presenters and format from 3am until midday have been unchanged for more than fifteen years; either side of that, Janice has been there for eight, Steve Wright for nine, and JV sounds as though he's been there for longer, but it's only six.

Lesley tinkered around with the evenings and weekends, with varying success, to the chagrin of those who like the specialist shows (who usually have a far greater depth of their music available in their homes anyway), or because of retirements. She left before the real work could be done, upon the next round of contract renewals; there must surely be change then, but unless a strong leader is found, and quickly, it'll be a case of "as you were, lads..."

My main problem with Lesley Douglas's tenure is not really the daytime presenters but the way the music has become almost the same for about 18 hours a day. There's so little variety compared to when I started listening just 7 or 8 years ago, with the same new "cool" bands and old dull ones (and their 1 or 2 songs) going round and round ad nauseum.

Anyway... interviews for R2 controller are being held this Friday, with both the acting controller and current head of R2 music up for the job.

I think John Simons would be the best canditate as he would be able to give his experience from the commercial radio sector to the BBC. He's also done a fantastic job at GMG..

Yup I agree - but the rest of radio is even more guilty of this than Radio 2. At least Radcliffe/Maconie/Long/Lammo explore the extermities of pop and we still have some (albeit less) alternative programmes.

Can I totally echo Ian's earlier post.
I find it really really sad how the music played has gone downhill in the space of 6 or 7 years.
I used to really look forward to hearing what was going to be played, now you KNOW exactly what's going to be played, a cardinal sin in my opinion

The worrying thing about a new controller is if they come from the commercial sector (eg GMG) they'll just play it even safer. Or maybe the choice of music available at the BBC will blow their mind!

When the announcement is made I intend to write to the new controller and ask what their music policy will be, pointing out that the BBC should use their remit to play a much wider variety of music and not merely 'ape' commercial radio.

I don't know about new signings, I would like '09 to see the end of the failed experiment and certain ex Bannister types got rid of.
