I wonder why JV insists on giving air time to thick ranting illiterates during what might be serious discussions. Today's "Alf Garnett" just made me want to switch off, he added nothing to the discussion other than "they just wanted a good time, they don't want to go to bed early" over and over again whilst defending the cut-price chavs who made other cruise passengers lives a misery.
There's a category of people who just want to shout and get emotional on air, and think that this represents "participtive discussion". It drags the show down.... well further down. |

Sometimes when people phone in , they seem like the perfect participant when talking to the producer or researcher, but as soon as they get on air - they either turn into a nervous burbling heap or a ranting raving loony tune. You can never tell till it's too late. I was on a Radio 2 programme a while back - I waited ages and ages to talk - I was really put off by the other callers being on the same phone line too -and then when the DJ talked to me in his "DJ voice" - it didn't seem real somehow- it was like, oh come on - nobody talks like that on the phone- it really seemed odd - it threw me ten left. If I ever did it again- I'd be ready for that, but as a first experience it's quite surreal. Maybe there was a lot of that happening today. |

You may well be right Rachel. And if so, I'd like to think that he's sitting at home now with his head in his hands and muttering "Never again".
My money would, however, tend to be on him being glued to the Listen Again feature, and regaling the regulars in the pub tonight about how he "really told them" on the JV show.
We were talking about perhaps going on a cruise in the not too distant future, but we worried that perhaps it might be a bit boring for us. This P&O cruise actually sounded a bit like a bad night on Manchester's Moss Side. A real shame for those who had booked early and paid top whack (like £8K in some cases). |
