very busy place too by the looks of it.. 
I don't understand how a complete and imposing factory like this seems to be totally illegal and nobody notices!
Surely somebody must have had cause to notify the authorities??

Maybe the people concerned who employ these workers for the factory's thought they would get away with this. The problem is workers from other countries think £3.50 an hour is a lot of money. They are also scared to speak out as they will be out on the streets. They probably rent houses which are over crowded too.
Some of the clothes are good quality too. I would be scared to wash some of them as they would shrink or go out of shape. So I don't buy them.. |

Yes, but a whole workforce? and surely the factory is inspected by somebody or other.... what about the tax people too.
I take your point about being scared but I'd have thought at some point, one worker would get sacked or end up in a row and go to the authorities in anger..
Then again, maybe the foreign workforce are happy to do the work and don't regard it as wrong?

As with any retailer, you have to look carefully. The pyjamas my wife bought from Primark just before Christmas are of comparable quality to M&S but at a quarter of the price. However a lot of what they sell seems to have very little substance - I know you could say that about a lot of fashion clothing - but it's so cheap that many people buy it, wear it and throw it away, rather than wash it.

No it's not - reporting of worker abuse and underpayment is common in other countries, and has been for decades, but it is less so in this country. Last year's expose of conditions in India didn't seem to have any effect upon sales - will their relatively youthful customer base be more concerned about immigrant workers in Manchester?
(This factory also manufactures for Peacock/Bon Marche, but they have escaped the full glare of publicity)
I remember 10-15 years ago handling import documentation for a company which overprinted and machine-sewed UK washcare labels onto tops, blouses and T-shirts etc for a well-known high street chain. The invoices showed unit prices of less than 25p. Our client used to charge 74p for his bit (he's long since gone out of business, by the way), and they'd appear in the shops for £4.99 and upwards. Retailers' profit margins aside, considering that there are some who consider that a fiver is a lot to pay for such things, it's hardly surprising that the unfortunate people who have to make them are not paid enough.
