I haven't been following all the facts on this but it would appear that the Travellers living illegally on Dale Farm in Essex have been told to move out or they'll be moved out forcebly..
Looking at the news this evening, some of the Travellers ( bit of an ironic name for those who want to stay put? ) said their kids need to stay in school etc.. but do they pay any Council Tax on these sites to contribute to social services and education? They may, I don't know...
Personally, I don't think they should be allowed to build what they want without permission and indeed live illegally like this. It just adds fuel to the fire of discontent when "legal, law abiding folk" are struggling to make ends meet! _________________ Johnnie Walker read out my message on Pirate Radio! 13/8/07

But is it actually illegal not to live in a bricks & mortar fixed abode? _________________ Lord Evan Elpuss, Your ideal job is a Lumberjack. |

Well it is on land which is not approved for residential use and without the required Planning and Building Regulation Permissions for each "dwelling" - bricks & mortar or otherwise..
There are thousands of people who own beautiful plots of "back land" but don't stand a cat in hell's chance of obtaining building permission.. what if most of them decided to just build what they like?
I'd like to build myself a log cabin but I accept I wouldn't be able to.
It's just another case of "we'll do what we want and sod the rest of you mugs"..
"They'll have to get the Army in to move us" boasted one of them on the news.. I think we should do just that if that's what it takes. _________________ Johnnie Walker read out my message on Pirate Radio! 13/8/07

Military force is seldom necessary. Repeated applications of a mixture of chicken and pig poo on adjacent fields normally works a treat!
And as a bonus you get excellent spuds the year after! |

Ha ha, yes I remember seeing a TV clip of a farmer doing just that with a muck spreader, the travellers soon moved on.
There's been a couple of similar sites sprung up in Warwickshire, the one in Bulkington was forcibly evicted in 2004 even though they owned the land. The travellers had erected buildings, fences and roads without planning permission from Nuneaton and Bedworth Borough Council.
More recently around 100 travellers moved on to a field near Shipston-on-Stour, after buying the land in 2007. I think there's still a public enquiry ongoing. The site is next to the home of Olympic minister Tessa Jowell

I wouldn't worry too much about travellers if they lived in co-existence with their neighbours. But you seem to hear so often of attendant problems with noise, petty crime and the like.

Do you remember the disgruntled farmer who sprayed the complete Bank frontage with his Muck Spreader?
I do think this "safety in numbers" law breaking attitude displayed by Travellers should be stamped on.. there was a item on our local news where a family was threatened with eviction because their beautiful Barn conversion didn't have the necessary permission.. and it really was a nice job, not some sprawling hot potch of caravans, mobile homes and bungalows. _________________ Johnnie Walker read out my message on Pirate Radio! 13/8/07

Yeah. They robbed our hanging baskets! That was when they invaded a local car park opposite the pub, and unfortunately the landlord was doing a roaring trade for weeks and made them welcome. They eventually left but the estate's been plagued by rats ever since. |
