I hope that's in addition to his current Sunday slot. If not, I guess I won't be hearing him much in the future as we have other commitments on Saturdays. |

Odd appointment? Can't believe this is Bob Shennan's first appointment. Way too quick. And would the acting controller have made such an appointment in Shennan's first week?! Curious. _________________ Who Can Take A Sunrise, Sprinkle It With Dew... |

Has it been announced that this was the new controller's decision? Not to my knowledge. I'm sure all will be revealed at 4.30pm! |

If it is a Shennan decision, don't be surprised to see Simon 'I'm not going to Salford so need another job, old mate Bob' Mayo in the Sunday tea time slot! _________________ Who Can Take A Sunrise, Sprinkle It With Dew... |

Tis on the schedule page for the 7th on the R2 website. Gots to say - much as I enjoy the occasional Walker - him, plus 3 hours of Bob equals five hours of what I anticipate will be fairly similar musical fare.
Hmm...
Different every time?!

Wonder if he'll mention it at the end of today's show?
Must admit I'd be happy to listen on Saturday nights as the TV is lousy.

This still might be a fill in - like Lester - till Shennan finds something to ultimately replace Brand. (Ahem ... Danny Baker ... ahem)
Walker might be quite good in this slot - especially if allowed to be a little 'pirate radio' - i.e. callers, a spontanious playlist and most importantly, live. If he sticks it on tape, it's gonna be a shame. _________________ Who Can Take A Sunrise, Sprinkle It With Dew... |

It was indeed mentioned on tonight's show, firstly around 5 mins to 6:00pm and then again at the end of todays show where he said it was in addition to his Sunday evening show. _________________ Lord Evan Elpuss, Your ideal job is a Lumberjack. |

Danny Baker's mate/agent! See my previous message for what Johnnie actually said at the end of his show, or listen again to hear it straight from the horses mouth! _________________ Lord Evan Elpuss, Your ideal job is a Lumberjack. |

If it's anything like the Pirate show that Johnnie did on BBC Essex back in the summer of 2007 it should be great.
Seems they have at long last realised that it's the 'Pirate generation' who would actually like to listen to radio on a Saturday night, not that of the previous incumbent.

I think they needed to fill something with quality radio instead of these celebrity's who have tarnished radio 2 over the years. Not all are brushed with the same act, but hopefully Bob ( The New Controller ) will consider we don't need celebrities dominating BBC Radio 2 airwaves. There are plenty other top quality jocks who are probably wanting for the call up. This may not be the New controllers doing, but I'm sure he had a little say in it.. |

I heard his trailer how he wants to sound like he's 21 again and is pretending he's broadcasting on a ship. Like the jingles which must have been made for him.. |

More information now available:
http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio2/shows/piratejohnniewalker/
According to the schedule pages, it's only an 8 week run. Sounds like a great concept though - and the trailers sound promising. I'm guessing it won't be live though.

I heard the trailer last night for the first time during R&M's show.. it sounds like it's going to be good.
Maybe JW will do it live, he works best in that situation... cock up's and all! _________________ Johnnie Walker read out my message on Pirate Radio! 13/8/07

Johnnies quite busy these days what with doing breakfast all next week as well. This new show ons aturdays sounds pretty good-I wonder if it might become a permanent fixture-that could allow Simon Mayo to take over the sunday slot permanently.(well until he takes over from Ken Bruc ein 2 years time!) |

What a fantastic show. The production was brilliant with some old & new jingles. The music was brilliant. You are can only to do the old method by writing to the show. |

Record "Pirate Johnnie Walker" in decent quality!
A recording tip for anyone who has a Sky or Freeview decoder and either a DVD recorder, hard disc/DVD recorder combo or a Sky Plus box. Select the BBC Radio 2 channel on the digital box and switch so that you can record to your hardware. If you're out on Saturdays, simply set up the Timer Record to grab the output of the digital box. I would allow a couple of minutes either way to cope with mis-timings or over-runs.
If you record direct to DVD you can then finalise the disc, put it into your pc and rip it to an MP3 file for playback either in WMP, iTunes or whatever, and of course you can save it to an ipod, iphone etc as well. There's lots of software that can rip from a DVD and make an MP3 easily.
If you record to a HDD recorder first, you can usually do some tidy-up editing at the beginning and end before dumping it to DVD. The thing about recording to DVD is that you take the satellite/freeview picture with the stereo as well, but that doesn't matter because you can strip it out later.
If you're still using a humble Nicam VHS recorder, simply take a stereo sound pair (red, white) output from a tuner or music system and plug it into the VHS (select Line In or whatever). When you record, it will be OK even without a video picture. The sound from FM Stereo will be very good - better than MPEG on a good tuner. Digital radio ain't all it's cracked up to be. |

Hi colby,
Just use Total Recorder or Audacity and record it from 'Listen Again' directly on to your hard drive.
I occasionally record something on Sky+ If I'm out, but lately the sound quality of Radio 2 on there is not that good. Not sure what the problem is?

I certainly use a dedicated sound recording program (I use WireTap Pro, which is really good) on my Apple but the download is just not as good. True it's better now than it used to be but for some programs I prefer better quality. And the stream isn't always consistent either on my connection.
The point of my post is that a lot of people don't think to use their DVD or hard disc recorder to capture radio output off satellite or freeview.

Sky has been screwing down the quality of standard broadcasts as a lever to get people to buy into its HD package (which isn't as good as it should be either!).
I object to funding the Murdoch clan personally even though we have a basic satellite box on a once-only fee. For us the quality of BBC radio is pretty good, but it depends where you are in the satellite footprint of course. |
