Snow is due to spread across the country as the cold weather is being blamed on the Russians. Laughing

This may reach you over the next 24 hours. London and the South East is expecting upto 10 inches. Monday morning will be a nightmare..

We have a thin covering right now and it's really bitterly cold here with icey winds blasting us from the North Sea... I just looked out of our 2nd floor window to see some of our pigeons huddled together on the roof. I don't know how they survive this cold. Sad

Typical. Tomorrow morning I've got to drive 100 miles down to Heathrow.

Normal route is the M40 (from Warks.)

Usually I cut from the M40 down to the M4 near Maidenhead, past Slough and onto Heathrow which avoids the M25.

or maybe I'll just take the M40 right down to the M25

Another route is to go via M45 and M1 then M25

Must listen out on the radio for trouble spots/snow.

I got up just after 5 am this morning, all upcited, about the snow I'd heard tell of on the news- looked out the window.... nothing , not a flake of it; bearly a frost. There has been a little snow in the last hour or so but nowhere near enough to be able to cancel my dentist appointment this m orning - there's a couple of hours to go before I'm due in the chair. I've just had an awful thought- imagine getting snowed in - while I'm at the Dentists- looks like you're gonna be here for a while Mrs H - have you thought about a few extractions at all?

We've had just enough snow to cover everything but the roads appear to be clear, apart from the usual rush hour trouble spots, and only a few schools in the remoter parts closed. The sky's just clearing, we might even get some sun to warm things up, minus 1.7C at the moment.

It's snowing a bit harder now- the Dental Receptionist has told me that it's not snowing at all where I'm going - so here goes.... off to the seaside.....now what is I have to take?- blanket- food- water- shovel - wellies- sos flares-mobile- teleport belt, oh and some dosh ( for bribes)

Tis just a check-up... last time I got a discount for being so good.... Smile

( well really it's cos I have only one tooth)

I escorted my wife to the bus stop so that she wouldn't fall in the icy conditions. As I returned home I slipped on on the skating rink like road and fell over myself! Laughing

I'm back home , or for the scousers... I'm bachhhhhh...

not a bit of snow on the roads at Weymouth... just a bit slushy on the pavements and on the seafront, where it was FREEZING!! Still everyone driving at 2MPH though-- southern jessies... what are we like?

My nashers are fully nashable and nashing nicely- still cost £47 though.

5" in Northumberland -those were the days - I can remember climbing up a snowdrift in Northumberland, when I was a wee bairn, and standing on a lamp-post at the top.
Top tip - never wear white socks when sledging in a coal bag. Your mum will go mad!

Very grey and still snowing, but it's quite wet and not adding much to the covering. Roads still free and buses running (I cannot believe they've cancelled them all in London - in my 15 years down there in 1950s/60s, when we had "proper" winters and they had "proper" buses, they always kept going).

Local primary school has kept them all in at lunchtime - killjoys: their field slopes and is just made for sledging!

£47 for a checkup (mine's similar) Rolling Eyes

- you can understand why they all wanted out of the NHS!

A couple of schools in Chorley have closed. I have no idea why, as they're only a couple of streets from my house and it's all perfectly fine. Seems a bit of an over reaction, really.

Was listening to discussion on Matthew Bannister's show and reflecting how our school never closed its doors, even in the snow of 1963. What's changed?

It's been snowing all day in East Sussex. The local school was closed as most of the kids come from outlying villages and the buses couldn't make it. The main roads are driveable, but Southeastern trains aren't running any services to London, they are stopping them about 20 miles outside. Would never have happened in the days of Diesel engines!

What's changed?

We walked...

(Schools were more local - so less need or reliance on staff and parental car journeys or public transport)

Heating systems were less sophisticated, thus less prone to breakdowns.

School buildings were in better condition - they may have wonderful computer, language and science labs inside but the fabric outside (and above, because there are a lot of leaky roofs) has in many areas not been touched or maintained properly since then.

And the over-riding reason:- Health and Safety, for unless all the paths and roads are kept clear of snow and ice someone might slip, fall, break something, and sue. Rolling Eyes

The problem with this country we are not really prepared. They don't need to keep adding grit after grit. The outside lane of the motorways were still full of snow. The highways agency need to push the snow to the side. Can't they do that because of Health and Safety reasons Laughing

This is country is becoming a third world country, and him at Number 10 ain't helping. I feel ashamed of this country. It's also rubbish they knew about this days ago .

Now you are being ridiculous to even think of suggesting Gordon Brown is at fault, Mark.............

Of course we are never prepared because we get these conditions so rarely and they don't last very long when they do. Are you suggesting we have all the equipment for a 'once in every 18 years event' occurring?

I must admit I couldn't recall having that much snow in 1991 and maybe up here we didn't. However we worked out that we bought our bright orange snow shovel 18 years ago, (in Bakewell so the label on it says!) and we haven't used it since! So maybe they are right!

Lovely photographs, Rach - nine o'clock and hardly a soul about, save at the station!

Although I didn't realise until I went out mid-morning, most of our schools were closed today, rather than yesterday when it actually snowed, because none of the approach roads had been gritted last night and everywhere was one great skating rink this morning (and still is, despite some earnest sunshine). Local councils have apparently run short of the stuff, a statement you might think incredible after one day of winter weather, but then they haven't really needed that much of it for the last ten years and a stockpile costs money.

The question is, is it really worth spending a lot of taxpayers' money to hold in reserve a lot of expensive equipment and raw materials for use on two or three days of the year, on recent performance.

On the basis that a miss is as good as a mile, all the preparation in the world doesn't, and hasn't, avoided the disruption seen in Canada and the US this past week, caused by their normal winter weather.

It looks as if you might miss the next band of snow - councils here have been given a Red Alert by the Met Office to expect lots of white stuff first thing tomorrow morning.

It's certainly getting colder - minimum last night -1C, max today +2C, but it's already -2.5C. I'm nipping out to help my wife negotiate the treacherous footpath from the bus stop, but with my track record it might be a case of United we stand, Together we all fall in a heap and see what we've broken (hopefully only her laptop!) Laughing

Ah yesterday was – how should I put it? Not what I was hoping for Ron, but I was home – warm and happy by 6:30 ish. Surprisingly, the thing that I thought would mess-up my day turned out to be the only thing that worked really well; the trains. Perfect timing on the journey up and down.

Booking in advance means you can go first class with two singles for around two thirds of the cost of a second class cheap day return- the only downside is you have to catch an agreed train. It was quite amusing cos when you book first class tickets on line you get an allocated seat with one of those little ticket things in the top letting everyone know that they can’t sit there- well there was only two of us in first class … up and down.

I was surprised by how much snow and ice was still on the pavements in London- it was freezing too! Big Ben’s makeover looked pretty in the sun, and the London Eye is bigger than it looks. Buskers were out in force, and a man dressed as Zorro – swords and all, was accosting people on the south bank- if he hadn’t called me “blondie” – I may have stopped to talk to him. (I’m so much more than just a hair colour) I didn’t take my camera (who wants to look like a tourist in London?) I have a few snaps on my phone but you need a 6-month training course (yep I’m a shumck- it’s a Motorola) to learn how to transfer them to a PC. My old phone did it by infrared transfer – it was really easy. I have a very nice snap of my lunch bought from M & S Simply Food at Waterloo, on the fold down tray thing in front of my seat. Fruit Salad – hand baked Crisps (what do they mean, hand-baked?) and Pomegranate and Raspberry Juice.

What I really want to know is – where are all the Pigeons’ feet? The Pigeons at Waterloo station have no feet- it’s an outrage!
