I've had R2 on in the background a fair bit whilst at home this week and for once am pleased to have heard Steve Wright. What a brilliant selection of oldies today! But I was surprised that he seemed to regard Kenny Ball's Midnight in Moscow as a bit of a curio. It was a high chart climber at the beginning of 1962.

I suppose there aren't many authentic Russian songs which have been turned into trad jazz instrumentals and made Top Ten both here and in the USA, so in that sense, and in the context of what he normally plays, it is a curio. _________________ Ron |

He likes to make out he's not old enough to remember some songs..
Yes, I heard the oldies too and they were good today.
By the way, he played (I'm your) Venus.. who recorded this?? My wife and I were racking our brains trying to remember! not the Bananananaramamama version..... _________________ Johnnie Walker read out my message on Pirate Radio! 13/8/07

Think it was Shocking Blue who did Venus.

Isn't it part of his job to remind you of who sang what after he's played them? As the great Johnnie Walker once said 'What's the point of playing records to the public if you don't tell them what they've just heard?' _________________ Lord Evan Elpuss, Your ideal job is a Lumberjack. |

I can't argue with that LEE... I think it was the first track too.
I did comment on it to Mrs SFF at the time... but it was soon forgot about in the whirlwind of a show which followed _________________ Johnnie Walker read out my message on Pirate Radio! 13/8/07

No, but thanks to the axing of the big quiz they're not broken up by the news anymore.
(That's the proper news, as opposed to the news headlines that Steve seems to think we need to hear every 5 minutes). |

I don't understand why anyone listens to the BIG show, SW is just a parody of himself now, he can't be bothered to give listeners the artist/track details, he, as Ian says, thinks we want the news rehashed every 5 mins, and he's just plain boring! _________________ MiS |

On the other hand, I don't understand why anybody wouldn't like him... I think his show and it's features are perfect afternoon entertainment. There's not one section of the show or co-presenter I don't like!
and of course, his listening figures are up by half a million so he must be doing something right _________________ Johnnie Walker read out my message on Pirate Radio! 13/8/07

I didn't like him way back in the "Mr Angry Era", but these days I think he's a laid back, self deprecating and at times, very amusing presenter. I wouldn't say I'm a great fan, but I have no problem listening to him with or without Tim Smith and Janie Lee Grace. I don't think he takes himself very seriously these days, and I loved the way he handled the "fat" issue, always being the first to mention it.
Oh, and the music's great. _________________ Minx

Starting the show one day with "Fatboy here" was a nice touch, and when he played Lip Up Fatty by Bad Manners, he chimed in with "It's my song" with very neat timing. |

I too like Steve as a presenter, I just wish he would stop playing the same records all the blooming time.
He does play some good stuff which some of the other presenters never play but the repetition of certain "hip" songs justs offsets all the good stuff |
