I made the mistake of weighing myself and was surprised at how much I weighed, I used to be about half- ¾ of a stone lighter although according to the whizz bang scales I am not technically overweight. However I have out grown some of my clothes and would at least like to attempt to fit in them again.

I have bitten the bullet about 2 weeks ago I bought an exercise bike for me and my O/H to use. He kindly assembled it for me and it lives up in the loft, I mean that is where it is used rather than just ‘put’ there, I used it once the first weekend but couldn’t get motivated to use it last week at all.
Then I had a really good go on it last weekend and I am now doing half an hour a night on it, burning about 600 calories according to the display, this may be a bit optimistic of course but I feel it must be doing some good so I will carry on. I also go for a walk every lunchtime for about half an hour and I’m trying to give up nibbling during the day, this is not easy as we get free biscuits at work but I’ve managed not to have any since Tuesday.

I’ve managed to get O/H to use the bike as well which is great, he used it Monday and yesterday but Tuesday went for a burton as he was watching tv. He is using again as I type though which is great.

Is anyone else trying a bit of keep fit or trying to lose a bit of puppy fat?

My wife and I have been members of a gym for two years.

My wife attends the gym 3 times a week, including a swimming session. She hasn't taken any other steps towards losing inches/pounds but has dropped a size from 18 to 16.

As well as attending gym twice a week (1hr 10mins each session), I've cut down on beer, almost eliminated crisps, biscuits, snacks, and I have lost 8 pounds, and my waist doesn't fluctuate, stays a steady 33inches.

I'm stronger in my arms and I can run 1km which I never could before.

Yes the gym is good for us, and it's something we do together every week, so good for our relationship Smile

He's gone a bit quiet on the subject in recent weeks, and, although he says he's joined a gym as well, I think he has a healthy aversion to all the blood, tears and sweat that are exacted there.

I've lost almost two and a half stones over the last five months, just gently by cutting down on most but not all the fatty dairy products and sticking to regular meals rather than grazing in between. I've also done more walking - my boots now get a regular mudbath rather than just sunburn.

My waistline has shrunk, although it's not quite down to your 33", John. The charity shops, crying out for stock at the moment, have had a sizeable consignment of trousers.

A routine blood test in December showed that I had high trygliceride levels, though the LDL and HDL cholesterol figures were OK . ( Triglycerides are the third major component of cholesterol measurement.) So I cut out most dairy products (except for a little cheese), cut out meat and ate mostly fish and vegetarian foods, snacking on nuts and seeds where necessary. Although we have been gym members for years, I stepped up the cardio vascular side of my routine from 15 minutes to 45 minutes.

The result? Triglycerides down to acceptable range - LDL (the bad cholesterol) right outside the safe range!!! I lost a couple of pounds. I must be doing something wrong somewhere. Sad

I'm still managing to keep going, I used it every night last week for half an hour along with 50 minutes on Sunday. I am going for 35 minutes per night this week.

I feel a bit fitter but I don't think any weight has come off yet, I will keep plugging away and I'm sure it will eventually.

At least 40 minutes per night on rowing machine, exercise bike and weights - all in the comfort of my own home. Need to say fit if I'm to continue climbing mountains! Have recently persuaded my employer (an NHS trust) to sign up to the Cycle To Work Scheme (the downside is that I was "selected" to evaluate the tenders for our 17 sites around England!), so I'll be buying a mountain bike next month. Looking forward to taking it into the wilds of Northumberland.
