Radio 2 are doing a documentary on Gene Vincent at 7pm tonight. This should be worth a listen I think. Gene was a tragic figure in many ways, and I saw him lots of times in the sixties, indeed about a month before the car crash that killed Eddie Cochran in 1960. In the late eighties there was a musical about that tour called 'Be Bop A Lula' that played in Liverpool and other UK cities starring Andrew Schofield as Gene and Tim Whitnall as Eddie Cochran. It didn't make the West End as Bill Kenwright apparently wanted a 'happy ending!' Rolling Eyes

I'm going to listen again on this show... what a great night! Gene Vincent, Suzi Q and JW the Pirate all in a row!..

I think the section of Gene Vincent and the Blue Caps singing "Be Bop a Lula" in "The Girl Can't Help It" was one of the most exciting things I'd ever seen at the time! Cool

Those two shows followed by Bob Harris Cool Much more like Saturday's should be.
Of course Gene Vincent was immortalised in an Ian Dury song.

Cheers everyone. I think Roger Daltrey did a good job and the part where Gene took the interviewer to task over 'Heinz' was fascinating stuff. The mention of Billy Fury reminded me that he had the best stage presence of any UK act I've ever seen. Gary Mavers (Peak Practice etc) played Billy in the musical play of 'Be Bop A Lula.' There is a website for Andrew (Drew) Schofield and some of my photos of the show are on there. I'll give the site address if anyone is interested.
