Anyone who's heard Dermot's Saturday show will know that:

a) he doesn't know much about music (his producer does all the work)

b) he's not a very good interviewer

Therefore he's the obvious choice to present a new series of interviews about music, isn't he? Rolling Eyes

Good grief! Couldn't they have got someone else? Simon Mayo? Paul Sexton? Ken Bruce?

It pretty much sums up the state of mainstream broadcasting these days, does it not? I guess that, as a result of his high-profile exposure on the X Factor he's now managed to negotiate a higher contract fee with Radio 2 so they're having to keep him busy to justify the gig. Unfortunately.

I got the same impression from an article in Saturday's Times about Dermot's show!

I never listen, partly because my Saturday afternoons are spent watching Racing & Football, but he's not my cup of tea anyway. I could damn him with faint praise and say I prefer him to Ross and Evans, but what would that mean? Rolling Eyes

I have to admit to being similarly inclined. I avoid Woss and Evans like the proverbial plague but I do at least listen to O'Leary on occasions - well, "hear in the background" rather than listen, that is. Usually if I'm pottering about doing something else on Saturdays. I'd much rather listen to Mr. Walker in that slot, though.

After SOTS - which is a must - I don't generally listen to R2 on a Saturday at all now, prefering Plant Rock on DAB when I have access to it.

I can't stand him.. Evil or Very Mad he's got to be the most boring, mumbling and waffling presenter on during the daytime. I'd even go so far as to say I'd rather listen to Evans than O'Blimey!

Luckily for me, I've just found out my new DAB radio will now pick up Radio2 as long as a fly doesn't pass by the aerial..
maybe they've turned another transmitter on in the Norfolk area?

anyway, the DAB radio has a recordable slot in card thingy so I can record SOTS or POTPs or JW Pirate's show and listen to that instead!
Mind you, I'm really getting into Gold on a weekend.. they play some great stuff.

This piece?

Interesting article. It seems nice but is basically saying that all the work is done by Dermot's team, which confirms what I think most listeners have been able to tell.

Most of the work is done by the production staff on most of the shows now. I personally don't mind DOL's show now.

Yes, but the production staff don't provide the voice. It's the same with Evans. The production team might come up with good ideas but it's still that horrible voice that's heard when the mic's opened.

Dermot O'Leary's Show is excellent entertainment on a Saturday afternoon.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with his interviewing style.

It's good to note that we all have a different POV with regard to some of the mainstays at Radio 2.

Quite right Mark - it seems to me from reading these boards that most people on here are very selfish and only want what they like - they forget that most of these shows that they dislike all have a very large and happy audience - so they must be doing something right

I did enjoy Dermot's show in it's Saturday Club incarnation, but I've steadily gone off him. It's like one of his sentences: starts off well but just dribbles away...

His Saturday afternoon show is pleasant enough, but music and interviews are not his strong points.

I'm sure they do have a large and happy audience, but it doesn't change the fact that whilst there are lots of people who might well like people like Evans (for reasons I just can't fathom) there are also lots of others who don't - irrespective of the size of his adoring audience.

If the maxm for a R2 is 7m then potentially 53m don't listen Shocked

My point is that I don't listen to him at all, anywhere, because his demeanour is juvenile and patronising.
