Simon Mayo is a fine presenter-he will no doubt be joining Radio 2 on a permanent basis soon.

Ideally I would like to see him take over from Jeremy Vine , however it is more likely he will take over from Ken Bruce.

I don't "get" this charge of Chris Evans being childish. He's exactly the same age as myself , as near as makes no difference, he says and does things in the same way that I do. He's lively, exciting and a wee bit bouncy, but not childish. He may be childlike at times but that is a good thing.

Well, we all have our perceptions. If I'm in the car and listening to R2 during the 5.00pm weekday news I only have to hear that silly opening jingle and the sound of Evans' voice and my first reaction is "Oh ffs shut up you idiot". When I hear his stupid "me, me, me, aren't I having fun?" trails during the day my reaction is the same.

I was in a corner shop the other day and the staff had Evans on their in-store radio (everywhere!) and I just couldn't believe the banality of what I was hearing. I quickly bought what I needed (I think it was milk, if you're interested Cool ) and got out.

We're gonna have to differ, Rach, but I honestly do think his whole style is childish. And if nothing else his voice just annoys the hell out of me.

I much prefer Simon Mayo in the slot. But each to her/his own - and I respect your own opinion.

I like the way he is able to enthuse his team and listeners to an almost infectious degree of mania about what are in reality quite normal everyday things but which when presented in his exciting way, provide a common vehicle for the listeners to identify with at a person in the street level. In a nutshell he talks about everyday things in a way that makes them interesting, leaving listeners with the thought that their lives aren’t that bad after all.

In a, “ did you hear Chris Evans talking about growing potatoes last night- wasn’t it fab?… You know, I grow potatoes too”, kind of way.

That's interesting. The thing that you find exciting is precisely the same thing that I find not only intensely annoying but incredibly patronising too. It's a kind of "look what I've discovered about ......" on the assumption that the topic is as new to us, the listeners, as it is to him, the purveyor. It's incredibly condescending of him to think that we haven't seen or experienced what he is offering up, and also that we might think it remotely noteworthy. It's to say that his take on the everyday world is in some way so unique that we have to have it pointed out ad nauseum to us.

And to my mind, this "enthusing of his team" represents nothing more than bullying otherwise conservatively minded individuals into going along with his "trip". Maybe it's just me, but I quite often seem to hear embarassment, a kind of reluctant down-grading of intellect, amongst the regulars. I've worked in situations where it was "not on" to be seen as "not on the message", and his dialogue with members of his team seems eminently redolent of those times.

But hey! what the hell do I know? All I would say is that I still listen to him, partly because I need my glasses - which I can never find - to retune the radio, and partly because I find him not only irritating but also quite interesting to observe.... much in the same way as you might observe a catastrophe... like.. I'm glad I'm not part of it but it has purely intellectual and analytical interest.

Each to his own, as has been said. Confused

So what have we learned so far?

Some people like Evans, some people don't.

An astute observation. I assume you read the whole thread before coming to that conclusion.

What's particularly interesting is that opinions about Evans are so polarised, and such polarisation exists despite the time that Evans has now occupied his R2 slot. That surely speaks volumes. Almost all other R2 listeners I know can't stand the guy, and those who are a lot younger than "yer average R2 listener" think he's a ageing egotistical prat anyhow.

In fact, I was talking about him to some of my son's friends in the pub the other day, and on mention of the name "Chris Evans" (during a chat about how bad Uk radio is now getting) one of them replied "Chris who?".

She wasn't joking, as I later learned.

I think the polarisaton is only among a relatively small number, who are very vocal & keep going on & on about it. Otherwise the ratings would have dropped. Which they haven't.

I don't agree. I think lots of would-be listeners have just given up listening at that time of the day. I certainly have and I know several others who have, too.

I have, so much so that I haven't got back in the habit and keep missing most of the first hour unless I'm in the car.

It also means I don't hear the shows that follow Drivetime as I forget to turn them on too. I'm sure it's not just Drive that has lost listeners in the same way.

The figures suggest otherwise. The show churned about 150,000 listeners out of 5m when Walker left (3%). Then it's audience grew above Walkers end audience. So you & maybe 149,997 others are unhappy & make a lot of noise.

Either that or we're just a bit more discerning and won't put up with such banal cr*p at drivetime.

And, another thing, we too help to fund the BBC so we have a right to moan.

RE: Ian Robinson's post earlier on in this thread - it's the slot, not the presenter. I see where he's coming from, but not sure if I agree entirely (I've stopped listening to Evans and could spout off many reasons, but I think Minx and Colby have summed it up pretty well). Still, I think Evans is about level pegging, perhaps slightly above, Walker and Maconie's highest ratings. In which case, despite the constant plugging of Evans and his podcast, Ian's observation could well be true!

And any clawing back of the 5m would suggest new listeners, which then suggests a sizeable chunk of alienated listeners? Not that it matters much to the yoof chansing BBC.

No, of course not. But when programming of such a low standard (in my opinion) is foist upon me by a controller who appeared to be hell-bent on winding many listeners up, I have every right to voice my opinion - and vote with my feet by not listening. As I've mentioned before, I have the right to do so because I help to pay that particular presenter's inflated salary.

Simon Mayo won't replace Wrighty. I just think Simon wants to do a little music radio and just chat radio. I suggested Jeremy Vine could be replaced by Simon, but Five live isn't going yet so I can't see him getting a regular gig, just only cover work to get the listeners used to him?

Yes your opinion, but not 5 million listeners and over 13 million overall think the station is low standard? Inflated salaries isn't just the named presenter of Chris Evans, a bet Simon Mayo is getting a double helping with two stations?

Yes, my opinion. I don't care if 5 million listeners have lower standards than me, but my opinion is my opinion and as I help to pay his salary I'm perfectly entitled to it.

I'll put hard-earned cash down on the table that Mayo's contract isn't anywhere near as lucrative as Evans' contract is. Unless you know something different, Mark!

Mark seems to know a lot - "Simon Mayo won't replace Wrighty" - so Mark, you know the schedule for infinity do you?

I wish Mayo WOULD replace Steve Wrong, then at least I could have R2 on between 2&5! As I've found Jezza Vine's prog increasingly irritating, these days I turn off at 12 and that's it for Radio 2 until Sarah for me. I wonder how many others do the same?

I certainly switch off between 2:00-7:00pm although it's been nice to be able to listen between 5:00-7:00pm. What a shame there's only one week left to enjoy.

Yes, I'm on the list! I don't listen to Wogan (I get fed up with the same emails from the same pseudonyms and Terry's constant wittering), I find Ken Bruce bearable but not that exciting, JV gets on my nerves because he's like a cat on a hot brick, I'm fed up with the sycophancy surrounding Wright and his desperate attempts to be appear cool....

..... and then there's the insufferable Evans.

I like Planet Rock. It's now owned by some very accomplished musicians (the inimitable Rick Wakeman being just one of them) and it's very good by comparison. Rick's Saturday show (when Ross is annoying us on R2) and David Jensen's Sunday show (when the boring stuff is on R2) are each a great refuge.

The other thing I like about Planet Rock is that it's totally unconnected with the owner of all the "BlandFM" stations - GCAP.

I really like Ken, he's a funny guy, and enjoy Popmaster. Terry's ok, often plays good stuff you don't get on other shows, and I like Boggy and Lynn. Can't stand Deadly, why does he think he can sing? Rolling Eyes

I do at least like his tongue-in-cheek sense of humour. He's very quick-witted to the point where some listeners udoubtedy miss his little asides.

Always good to see a thread go over 100 postings.

I always think to myself-"good original posting" to generate such interest etc.

Just a note to say how dull 5-7pm has been this week, he doesn't sound very enthusiastic does he, maybe its just his tone of voice ? Rolling Eyes

Can you please not look at me when typing the word "you" in the above sentence? I'll be out in the garden doing something infinitely more exciting than listening to the Evans-gob next week - I'll be watching grass grow.

I think nod meant to put the word me instead of 'you'. I have appreciated these last two weeks of sanity between 5:00-7:00pm. Shame it's come to an end. When's Evans next off?

Much as I like Mayo, it's a shame Stuart Maconie doesn't sit in any more. He seems to have been quietly dropped from this gig.

I think Simon's been great these last few weeks, so it's great to hear he'll be back again in the not-too-distant future (just a shame it's been useless Richard Bacon on 5 Live).

I'll admit Simon does shout a bit too much but he seems to bring out the best in the regulars (eg Jonny, Rebecca) while playing great music that he actually seems interested in. Just great fun.

I feel that Mayo is trying too hard - I feel he was better at music presentation when he was younger and on Radio 1. If he just relaxed a little and tried to be funny a bit less, he could be sooo much better.

I feel he's trying to be something he's not; well, at least not any more.

I haven't heard him this week, but I've mentioned that before, Rob.

I'm sure he's his own man really, but it's as if someone's told him to be loud, in case listeners might suffer Chris Evans withdrawal symptoms, or think they've gone deaf. He didn't do it when he covered for Ken Bruce, nor when he did one Bank Holiday Drivetime last year.

Yeah I agree with that: although I've had a lot going on this last week or so, Drivetime has been a bit, well, switchoffable. Not a lot of zip or excitement going on at all. Things have changed a lot since the old days of W963.

No doubt Simon's been told to keep up the volume or listeners might get used to having a normal, non-shouty person on Drivetime. Zoe Ball's almost as bad. Why must they shout? Ken doesn't, thank goodness.
