It's Sunday Club from BBC Radio Ulster 10 pm Sunday night. I was reminded by someone last night about it and listened to the first hour. You will probably enjoy it.

A well loved Children's Favourite from Uncle Mac's days tonight.....Robin Hood. Reminded me that I once checked in Richard Greene (who was Robin) on a flight, but didn't recognise him!
In those days (not centuries either!!) we had porters who lifted the luggage from the scales to the baggage belt on some desks. The 2 that were doing my flight that day were fine characters and as I was giving out the boarding card I heard them whistling a tune........... the Robin Hood of course! I looked down at the flight coupon from his ticket and it said Mr R Greene. As he walked away I could see it was him although he'd put on a fair bit of weight but still rather handsome.

I really wished that I was at the wedding where that was played instead of the requested Bryan Adams soppy Robin Hood track (that one which was at No1 for, what seemed like forever & a day!) I wouldn't have beeen able to stop myself from laughing!

I think he should get back on the telly in his garden.
I perfectly charming man but gardening is is forte not chat or music, get him back on Gardeners world

Think you're wrong on that score. He is very knowledgeable of music and did talk shows (Pebble Mill) before he did gardening TV. I think he did radio prior to that as well.
Just because you don't happen to like his type of music doesn't mean he isn't a good presenter.

I agree. Although I very rarely listen to him on R2 (not really my thing) but what I have heard of his show sounds perfectly OK to me. There are obviously lots of listeners who still like that style of presentation. At least he doesn't talk down to his listeners or fill the show with banality as is so often the case on other R2 shows these days. |

Alan's love and knowledge of music comes shining through on every programme..he's at home just as much playing music on the radio as he is in the garden.... |

| It's not really my type of music, but I do find it a gently enjoyable show and for someone with such a bland image he's good at slyly slipping opinions in. |

Alan's playing what must be the first piece of classical music that I remember liking just now. Bizet's L'Arlesienne Suite, La Farandole.
I knew it as 'At break of day as I went on my way' as a 10 year old when we listened to the schools music programme on the radio at school. Not sure if would have been Network 3 or the Home Service back then!

Alan has played some great records so far tonight. What other programme would include Hansel & Gretel's Dance Duet by the Manchester Children's Choir of 1929, Stilgoe & Skellern We Don't Go Out Any More about their dread of TV makeover programmes (including Groundforce!), The Blue Danube, Benny Goodman, Ivor Novello's Fold Your Wings etc etc.
Also that poignant recording of the nightingale singing its heart out in 1942 with British Lancaster bombers roaring overhead on their way to Germany. Alan didn't give the background to that story but the nightingale song was due to be dropped into a live concert on the radio. However the BBC producer thought it would cast a downer on the audience to hear the bombers and he made sure the soundman recorded it for broadcasting at a later date.
Hugely enjoyable Alan! Such variety in a single programme! |
