Sundays are shaping up quite nicely on Radio 2.
Elaine paige followed by sounds of the 70s with JW. i'm looking forward to Paul o'Grady's show, too, after a very promesing start last week

Sorry Clive but I couldn't disagree more. No offence!

With the exception of JW Sundays fall into two camps; bland (Jones and Ball) or shouty irritating (Wright, Paige and O'Grady)

I only listen to R2 for Johnnie Walker and Alan Titchmarsh (and the B'Stards have cut 30 minutes off that)

Still, on the positive side my scant knowledge of classical music is improving no end since I listen to Classic fm for most of the day

Sundays on R2 is a mess. As is R2 in general, let's be honest!

Yes Sundays really are a mess.

JW is on at the wrong time for a start. Why couldn't they just have substituted Sounds of The Seventies instead of the rubbish that Paul O'Grady spouts? I really don't know who the show is aimed at???

Miss the extra half hour from Alan Titchmarsh as well and shock horror he wasn't on at all yesterday.

Maybe if I record JW I can listen to it when he would normally be on, but that's a bit of a nuisance.

I don't know either, Helen. I was sat at Heathrow airport yesterday waiting to pick up a member of my family in Arrivals and listening to Johnnie Walker on my mobile phone. All well and good. Then Paul O'Grady (a bloke I do actually like as an entertainer) came on and I just had to switch to listening to MP3s. It really wasn't that good.

I have a feeling that PO'G himself will get bored with this fairly quickly.

I was a bit surprised at EP getting an extra half hour. I had thought that show tunes are a limited market and certainly not to everyone's taste.

Maybe I'm a bit old fashioned but I would have thought that Sunday lunchtime was more family time so I would have moved POTP to Sunday lunch, rather than Saturday

Yes, I thought that yesterday in fact. I keep thinking that POTP has been moved to Sunday lunchtimes rather than Saturdays - and it would suit me if it were. POTP between 12.00-2.00pm then JW 2.00-5.00pm, in fact!

I don't think my having to work on Sundays is going to be such a problem in future, I'll catch JW on Listen Again and I don't care if I miss the rest. Sundays are destroyed as far as I'm concerned, what are they doing to Radion 2?

I like the eclectic mix of music that Paul plays, though i thought last weeks show was better than this.
I listened last week not knowing who he was & loved the show
Then i learned it was Lilly savage, a performer i can't watch.
He does natter a bit too much, but i think it is a good show. a wide range of music.
I find the JW Sounds of the seventees far better than the Pirate JW.Maybe I am just more at home with seventees music.
As to elaine Paige, i think her show is very good overall. Part of what radio 2 is about- representing a broad sweep of popular music from all decades, with EP representing the show tunes
Was in Benny Green used to do this sort of thing? If he could be brought back from the dead, he should host the show. Otherwise Ms Paige will do nicely

I don't object to show tunes, I just think that two hours Sunday prime time is a bit much. As for Elaine Paige I find that I have a limited tolerance for shreiking and grotesque snorting. I know I'm repeating myself but I think the show should be given to Michael Ball. He would be a much more natural show tunes presenter than Paige and much more natural than his current slot. IMHO.

As for O'Grady, if he's not being Lily Savage than I don't see the point of him at all

Radion 2 Shocked is that radio-active ?

I think they are gradually reducing R2 into the old R1 Rolling Eyes

Clive

I don't think we were suggesting that Pirate JW is better than SOT70s, they were a series of fun time radio for those of us who remember and love the 60s music.

Johnnie is so much better when he broadcasts live. I just hope that maybe some of them will go out live later in the series.

As Colby says I too think Paul O'Grady will tire of the show (I hope so anyway.

There's always listen again on the internet radio, I'm preparing a roster!

I disagree here Michael I think he's doing fine in the slot he's in. The music played is far more varied than it's been for years. Much brighter way to spend those two hours on a Sunday. It would be quite predictable to have had him doing a show of showtunes.

I appreciate that Parky wanted to give up his slot, but did we have to lose all that fabulous music? Surely they could have found someone to take over the mantle, there must be a broadcaster who appreciates sheer quality?

I can take or leave Michael Ball, and some of the music he plays is OK, but it's no different to what you can hear at any other time. There is usually just one token track of the Sinatra/Cole/Fitzgerald era played to remind us of the Parky years.

There was an argument that Parkinson had got stuck in a rut, and played not just the same artists but the same tracks too often, and there was some truth in that, but to have the vintage totally removed from the range of our ears is very cruel. If I'm in I'll have CDs playing at that time these days.

I did, unusually, hear EP this Sunday. I do like the old musicals (I grew up with a lot of them on the family radiogram because my mother loved 'em) and she, or rather her producer, plays a good selection. It's just her voice and giggling I can't stand.

This week she interviewed Tim Flavin, star of the current production of Singin' In The Rain, certainly no shrinking violet when it came to singin' the praises of the show and its perfectionist, back-to-the-original "hoofer" qualities, to the detriment of Tommy Steele's efforts thirty years ago. He also had a go at the practice of parachuting into productions talent and reality show contestants, implying that they expended less effort, stress and work to get there than anyone else who had to undergo "normal" auditions. Which is probably not true.

Sunday's are ok I think. I'm not too keen on EP though but everything else is good, and if it's raining, even EP and a crossword is better than having to wear wellies.

Ron

I like musicals for much the same reason and the music that Parky played as my Dad had a small dance band in the early 50s so listened to a lot of that kind of music.

One thing I missed hearing during the day this year was 'In Your Easter Bonnet', sad I know Sad . I caught the end of David Jacobs' show and he didn't let me down.

Perhaps they thought it was time for a change re Parky's music which as I've said before I like but it had become to samey and dull to listen to, imo. There should be a show dedicated to this type of music but I don't think it needs to be in that particular slot. I don't get chance to listen to radio much during the week so, those two hours of varied music on Sunday mornings suits me fine Smile Haven't caught Paul O'Grady's new show yet so can't comment on that but across the whole day I like sundays current crop of shows.

Sarah K played "Easter Bonnet as well Helen.

Heloise, I am aghast that you could describe music of the kind Parky played as "samey and dull". It just beggars belief! We are talking Ella, Frank, Nat, Diana Krall, Ellington & Basie. All of them fantastic.

Mmm- I don't think the music Parky played was dull but he did tend to play a very narrow range and as a result the programme lacked sparkle despite the quality of the artists. I enjoy Michael Ball's programme but have reservations about EP and P O'G and I wouldn't be upset if Sunday Love Songs was ditched. Very Happy

Not too many fans of Wossy or his stand-ins of last Saturday either. If anyone wants to see these threads, they are both here:- http://www.bbc.co.uk/dna/mbradio2/F4387184

I can't stand the BBC message boards. I stopped using them a good 2 or 3 years ago and having just looked in there I can see why. Why am I still in pre-mod? Smile

Johnnie Walker probably wanted a show, and I guess he's trying to play out his last few years on the radio with different music shows. Also Steve Harley may not have been able to continue to present the show? Paul show is about Entertainment. It's only been going for a few weeks, so people must let it blend in.

Re:POTP - I loved Dale Winton playing 'Pop Go The Workers' by the Barron Knights!

The Bachelors sequence that begins 'I don't want to go to work/on my bike in the rain...' always reminds me of my brother, as he'd always sing this when a night shift was imminent!
