Richard is joining Radio 2 from June 2009 taking up a new permanent overnight show partly replacing Pete Mitchell and Mo Dutta's slots.

This is fantastic news-pop those champagne corks.

Allinson rocks-you bet he does.

That's the best news I've had in ages! I'll probably have to listen again most of the time though.

I did think there was something a foot (apart from the hints posted here) as I couldn't get Allinson's Albums on my internet radio last weekend. The show was no longer listed on the On Demand section of Radio Oxford. It was still available live though.

Full details of Richard's weekend shows are as follows:

Saturday-3-6am then followed by Zoe Ball

Sunday 2-5am then followed by Emma Forbes

Both shows will go out live.

6 hours a week of Richard a week-wonderful-can't wait.

Sounds good, though as with Helen I'm not likley to listen live to any of Richard's shows. If I'm ever insomniac (or the wife is snoring loudly) then it's always Radio 3 I put on.

But while sitting at the PC as I am now, Saturday lunchtime, I think the R2 iplayer could get some use!

Good post John-if you have not tried listening to Richard before then I would highly recommend giving him a try.

Certainly Richard deserves this elevation back to Radio 2 on a permanent basis after how he was treated by Lesley Douglas.

I'm sorry. I'm confused Confused

I suppose any term in a fixed slot of national radio is good, but for a presenter of Richard Allinson's long experience, is the weekend insomniac's shift really something to get excited about?

At least he's still free to act as cover during the week.

And why on earth would Emma Forbes and Zoe Ball want to do two-hour early stints, when precious few people are up, and for which they will have to spoil a good night's sleep?

Unless, of course, they are being groomed/trialled for something more substantial in the future.

I don't think it matters, really. What matters is that R2 hasn't pushed him out of the back door once and for all as we'd long suspected. Good news, therefore.

I think Richard's fans are absolutely delighted that he is back into the fold at the BBC on a permanent/full time basis.

I'm sure he will still be considered as cover for other daytime presenters-eg Sarah Kennedy, Steve Wright, Chris Evans.

Coupled with his Record Producers activities the future looks rosy for Richard and his fans.

I disagree-Richard would not have accepted the weekend gigs if he didn't want to do it/felt it was a good move professionally.

He won't go bonkers-I am sure he is delighted to be back at Radio 2 as a permanent family member.

Hopefully he will be given the musical freedom he likes re bringing to us the audience new groups and new songs.

Hopefully he will continue to be used a cover jock for the likes of Kennedy, Wright and Evans going forward.

Yes the press release has announced Zoe and Emma weekend breakfast shows. Which I wouldn't call them those. Emma Early Breakfast and Zoe a shortened breakfast show. They havn't announced Richard is taking over, overnights. Lucky the Radio times have added him for both shows.

Two top presenters have been shifted out of Radio2. Shame as Mo and Pete are well known presenters. Pete does know his music.

Oh he will go bonkers Mark: that's what happens. Smile Take a look around. Janice Long - fantastic but nutty as a fruit cake. Alex Lester - the Dark Lord- yep, but of another planet. Mo Dutta - lovely chap , completely in the wrong queue. Pete Mitchell - look what nights did to him- he turned into the speaking clock!

Why is it good news? He can make a show his own for the first time in nearly five years! And it's about bloomin' time.

Richard Allison, who has presented various shows on Radio 2 since 1997, is also given a new permanent slot presenting a three-hour early-morning show from 3am on Saturday and Sunday. The show will be made by the independent producer Somethin' Else.

Interesting comment about listeners on iPlayer from Richard in the Guardian article:-

_____________________________________________________________
quote:-

Allinson, who has previously worked at Radio 2, Capital and the BBC World Service, added: "We want to try something completely new at the weekends with lots of interactive stuff, both for the early risers and also for the growing audience who prefer to hear us through the BBC iPlayer"

An indication that ye olde past-time called "radio listening" is changing dramatically, for sure.

Or a realisation that some of us actually sleep during the early hours, but like to listen to Richard Allinson.............

It can't be coincidence that these three have become regular (and reliable) standins over the last year or so. I suspect the permanent slots are just to make it easier to keep them as standins - either because they're on contract, because it's easy to administrate, and/or because they're now part of the Radio 2 brand.

Anytime of the day you can listen into Richard. You don't have to just stay up. Also you can email him saying I'm tuning in on the I-Player, and may even get a mention. Your name heard twice. Laughing

Delighted to learn that Richard's shows will be going out live as opposed to being pre-recorded.

I'm sure Richard will be bringing us an exciting mix of musical choices-I do hope he continues to bring to our attention new bands /singers coming on the scene etc.

You might remember that when Richard stood down/was stood down from regular programmes on Radio 2 he was given a role presenting more live music programmes. He also started making the Record Producers series of documentaries. His programmes for local BBC stations was based on album tracks.

Am I the only one to detect a pattern here? I suspect that Richard is into a range of music and finds presenting playlisted programmes a tad boring after a while.

When you look at the "job description" for Radio 2 you'll see that daytime output is defined as 6am to 7pm, and Radio 2 has to meet specific requirements during these hours. Both Janice Long and Alex Lester use the relative freedom of the night hours to produce distinctive programmes. I hope Richard will find job satisfaction in doing the same, despite the antisocial hours.

Nice /informative post Rob.

I am absolutely confident/am convinced that Richard will find "job satisfaction" with regard to his new appointment to the weekend night time shows on Radio 2.

I'm sure if you tune in you will find Richard bringing us the listeners, new groups/songs alongside established/well known tunes from past years/decades etc.

Without doubt it's going to be exciting/a lot of fun hearing Richard back on Radio 2 as a mainstay presenter.

Allinson rocks-you bet he does.

Rob

I think you are right. I really enjoyed his late night show on R2 so hope maybe something on those lines will be what we'll hear. I'm looking forward to having something good to listen to instead of Drivetime.

Helen-You are clearly a woman of impeccable taste.

I'm sure if we tune into Richard's new shows over the coming months you will be "named check by Richard" as no doubt you will be writing in etc.

Richard is more suited to Primetime radio. I guess he'll prove well on overnights. Also more people will tune to him on I-Player, like myself.

Does anyone know what sort of audience figures Radio 2 get for their shows in the late/early morning slots.

From the various posts on this thread it does not seem many folk will be tuning into Richard's upcoming shows live.

The Rajar graphs I have seen start at 6.00am and end at midnight, so I haven't seen data for night hours. The figures for 6.00am and midnight are usually about 200k

There's old data here:

I don't listen to R2 in the evenings at all - ever. What I do want to catch up on I do so via modern technogeekery like iPlayer.

Thanks John-some useful insights contained within the data etc.

Certainly seems that listening numbers from 12 midnight to 6am on Radio 2 are extremely low.

It will be interesting to review the next set of data when it is released.

I will certainly be tuning into Richard's shows live starting shortly.

Yes-good point.

Perhaps they should, as more and more people seem to be using the iplayer to access their favourite shows.

I for one, catch up on about 10-12 hours a week of Radio 2 shows at the weekends.

It should be as easy as collect data about digital broadcasting stats. iPlayer server hits all return metadata that can be easily measured.

Yes but you can't just add metadata to Rajar data.

Rajar submitters need to enter iplayer data - tick the boxes and hours - so that the rajar statistics can be calculated in the usual way

Looks like "the old way" has to be brought up to date with the new methods of accessing R2. When it's possible to simply pull the data from a readily available feed it seems immensely inefficient to rely on ticking boxes, pressing buttons, etc.
