According to the Sunday Times today, Alan Johnson is looking at the ID Cards Scheme. IF this is scrapped by him it may be a vote winner as it is Tory policy too and may win over some waverers. We are already the most 'supervised society' with speed cameras, CCTV everywhere etc.

It has been announced by the Prime Minister today that ID Cards will NOT be made compulsory during the NEXT parliament. Does this leave the door open for some time in the future to bring the idea up again? How much money has been wasted already on this sinister scheme? Rolling Eyes

Hi Briant,

It's a ridiculous scheme IMHO, like you say so much has been wasted on it already. I guess they can't say that they will abandon it because of the wasted funds, but I hope it will be scrapped altogether.

When Alan Johnson was asked a few weeks ago about how much money scrapping the ID Card scheme would save, as the Conservatives had suggested at the time, he said, “ it would save hardly anything because we’ve already spent most of the 5 Billion on the infrastructure, the database and training”. So now it seems that because the ID Card scheme is unpopular (to say the least) although, not quite as unpopular as Gordon Brown, Labour think it’s a vote winner to say well, we were only kidding about turning the UK in a Nazi style society with “papers” and surveillance everywhere. Why don’t you vote for us, we’ve changed, all those cranky ideas we’ve had in the past 12 years, we’ve put them on the back burner, if you want it we’ll promise it. Clowns! All of them.
