Radio One is in its 40th Year .
Established 1967 by request of the Government following the banning of the 'pirates', Radio 1 met a need in the UK for a legal pop music station. The first Disc Jockey heard was Tony Blackburn with his breakfast show. The station became hugely popular with a pop music format by day, and rock/progressive music by night.
In 1993 radical changes were made to the station, including a lowering of the target audience range. Many of the established presenters were sacked or resigned and a new breed of young faces recruited. Audience ratings fell by 30% over a matter of months.... |

I would suggest that for those of us who were around at the the time, most had a deep affection for at least one of the Pirate Stations.
They were truly "our" stations and for some, there was almost an automatic aversion for the new Radio 1 before it had started! Government radio...
But, I remember quickly taking to the new station, possibly because of Tony Blackburn's friendly, familiar voice and in no time Radio 1 was "our" station too.
I was one of the listeners who completely abandoned it in the early nineties and found the delights of Radio 2.
I couldn't name one dj on Radio 1 now.... |

I can manage one. Who saw Chris Moyles on that programme celebrating Multi Coloured Swapshop and all the similar Saturday morning shows that came afterwards?
I wonder what (if anything) Radio1 will do to celebrate their anniversary year. They ought to do something. |

Lord E,
How many 'Saviours' of Radio 1 do we have to have?
Mr Moyles delcared himself to be it on MCSS, A certain Mr Evans was delcared 'the saviour of Radio 1' by its Hatchetmen.
Who's next, I wonder? _________________ Geddon

Like siamese twins, Radios 1 and 2 were joined in the beginning. Radio 2 went its own way to do the old 'light programme' stuff. It then evolved into the station we know and love (most of the time).
There fore Radio 1's Birthday is also Radio 2's Birthday, and we have some affection for the idiot child that never made it. _________________ Geddon
